We have cruised a number of times with mainstream lines and always enjoyed our holiday but this year we decided to splash out and have a week on a luxury line. After much research we decided on Seabourn. We arrived in Rome to embark the Seabourn Spirit on June 26th with a little trepidation. Will it suit us? Will it be too stuffy?
I can say that from the moment we arrived at the pier we realised this was the line for us. No lines to get on the ship, a glass of champagne to help you up the gangplank followed by a very civilised check in process in the lounge. Wow, what a start. We were escorted to our suite where a bottle of champagne was waiting and our stewardess arrived with luxury soap and another glass of champagne.
The suite was much larger than on our other cruises and had a large picture window, rather than a balcony which I was used to. I can tell you I didnt miss the balcony one little bit. The fridge was filled with soft drinks, beer and the spirits I had requested.
We decided to explore the ship, which didn't take long, this is a very small ship with only 208 passengers. Everywhere you needed to go was easily reached in a couple of minutes. I did wonder if this may be a problem during the week, to have very few places to go onboard.
We ate in the restaurant and the veranda cafe, the food and service were excellent. Anything you wanted(within reason) you could get. Any request, the response was "no problem Mrs Furniss". How did they know my name?
The ship has an all inclusive policy, so any drink was served whenever you wanted, little touches like cocktail of the day being served without asking, tasters of sorbet, fruit skewers whilst sunning on deck. Pampering at its best.
Very little in the way of entertainment, but that was a plus for us, good company good conversation and a sprinkling of music is all we need.
The ports of call were good but became almost irrelevant as I enjoyed the ship so much.
The best things? Its hard to pick them out, but the peace, service like I have never encountered and the sheer joy of uncrowded deck, pool and lounges.
The downside, I had to leave after 7 days. and it was quite expensive ( but then you get what you pay for) That really is the only thing I can complain about.
In summary, if you want glitz, entertainment, lots of places to hang out and have kids its probably not for you, on the other hand if you like peace and quiet, great food and service then it may be just what you are looking for. I'm already looking at when I can go again.
