This was our 27th cruise but our first with Seabourn. To be honest it's normally out of our price range but a special offer came along and we grabbed the opportunity. We are glad we did. We boarded in St Thomas. This was as painless as it could be, even if it wasn't as efficient as the big cruise lines. Our cases stood on the dock in the sun for several hours though and my wife was concerned that her cosmetics would be melting in the heat. They didn't but nevertheless it was a concern. The cabin (suite) was fine - clean, spacious and the fridge had been stocked with my preferred tipple. The balcony was literally a balcony as opposed to a verandah. The ship itself is quite old and there were signs of tiredness despite high maintenance ( a bit like my wife!) The engine exhaust is quite loud and regularly discharged a puff of soot onto the sun deck if the wind was in the wrong direction. We had glorious weather and smooth seas but I don't think I would like to be aboard in heavy weather as I suspect that despite stabilisation, movement will be appreciable. As expected, the food, the service and general demeanour of the crew was impeccable. The crew seemed to enjoy their work and it showed in everything they did. It's a small ship but it is still impressive that the waiters and barmen know your name by the 2nd day! We were inboard when an American health inspection took place. It was unnannounced but I think it fair to say that the crew went into panic mode. There was frantic cleaning, disposal of prepared foods and I hate to say, some deliberate hiding of equipment (with officer involvement) from the inspectors. We as passengers definitely took 2nd place that day. As a spectator it reminded me of an episode of Fawlty Towers!
As soon as the inspectors left there was visible relief that it was over - jobs were clearly on the line had the inspection gone badly. The ships entertainment was minimal - which is to our taste. Likewise, no art auctions, bingo or photographers - bliss! All in all we had a very relaxing 12 nights inboard the Legend but would we do another Seabourn cruise? - you bet we would but the price would have to come down again.

Superb.

The balcony is not one you can sit out on. The design and construction of the cabin is such that if your neighbour doesn't close their door carefully, it will slam shut and it will most certainly wake or disturb you. The door bell for your suite has the same chime as the tannoy system on other ships - you sit there thinking "get on with it" but it's you who is ignoring the doorbell - took a while to get used to. It's an ageing ship and there is a noticeable vibration from the engines - it's not that bad ( and it may promote sleep!) but compared to the modern big ships it's noisy. It takes a while to figure out the cabin lighting switchology On the other hand, the stewardesses are very efficient, the bathroom amenities are top quality, the walk in closet is narrow but good. All things considered I cant give it 5 or even 4 stars - that would be unfair to the Celebrity Solstice class cabins which have been very cleverly designed and have set a new design standard. I wasn't going to mention it but when we boarded some of the bedding was found to be stained. We pointed it out to the stewardess and it was changed immediately and we never had a reoccurrence but it should never have happened in the first place. I think Seabourn will find it hard to fill their ships in the current economic climate. They are introducing new ships with double the capacity but are still retaining their older smaller vessels. The only way I think they will be able to fill them will be by price cutting in the final month before sailing. That is how we managed to afford a Seabourn cruise.

Nice review, Mr Moyes. I'm curious as to what made the cabins worth only ***. I have always wanted to try Seabourne, but if the cabins are not up to scratch I won't as I certainly can't really afford it. I know what you mean about the US inspections having been through one in St Thomas - VERY tough guys. A bit like having an SAS raid.
