Our family of 4, consisting of my wife and I both early 40's, and our 2 daughters age 9 and 3, had a fantastic time cruising the Med on Voyager of the Seas. I had booked this as a surprise for my wife's 40th. We felt pampered from start to finish and nothing was too much trouble.
The Ship: Kept in tip-top shape with no signs of wear and tear. Always signs of visible maintenance going on which is encouraging and staff were always cleaning and polishing something. Plenty of activities to do, in fact if you did everything you'd need a holiday to recover!
Cabin: We had a Junior Suite on deck 9 which was very spacious and the walk-in closet was a boon for keeping all our clothes, clutter and suitcases out of sight. The fact that we had a bath was a bonus, particularly for bathing a 3 yr old who freaks out in a shower!
Food quality: Let me just start by saying that the food in the main dining room is not gourmet quality but for the most part it surpassed our expectations of wedding banquet style quality. Some was a little bland but it was all hot and reasonably tasty. If you want gourmet food then go to Portofino restaurant which we felt was well worth the $20 cover charge. The food in the Windjammer cafeteria was pretty good with plenty of choice.
Service: This is where we were most impressed. Our waiter, Harry, was outstanding and kept the kids amused with magic tricks during mealtimes. He was an absolute gem. Our stateroom attendant, Antonio, was also excellent and after asking for some ice the first day, he always made sure we were stocked up from then onwards. The towel animals were much appreciated by the kids (and me!) and it never ceased to amaze me how he could turn a pig sty of a room into an immaculate palace.
Excursions: We went on 4 ship excursions and although they were very expensive, they were all very interesting and very well organised. If the excursion left the pier at 1.30pm, it left exactly on time and if you weren't there, tough! No hanging around for stragglers, just the way it should be.
Entertainment: We went to the welcome parade on the Royal Promenade which the kids loved. Also went to 2 other shows in the main theatre both of which were very good and surpassed our expectations. We also attended the ice show which was amazing and made all the better for us as our eldest was chosen as the star attraction and whisked around the rink in a 'throne'.
Children's Facilities: Adventure Ocean (kids club) was another hit with us as it meant we could have a bit of down time away from the kids while they had fun doing lots of different activities and making new friends.
There were only a few mild complaints such as some of the bars and lounges got quite smoky in the evenings and the plates in the cafeteria were often wet (but clean). We also had a plumbing issue with our toilet but that was sorted after a few hours. Please lose the bingo and tacky pool games as well as I don't want a holiday camp at sea.
All in all though we had a fantastic time and will definitely cruise again in the future and we'll use Royal Caribbean for sure.
