Royal Caribbean Cruises - Liberty of the Seas

Liberty of the Seas

The second of the Freedom class of vessels, the Liberty of the Seas has more than once been compared to a floating version of Las Vegas - and it's easy to see why.

Boasting countless activities for guests of every age, the craft offers stage shows, mouth-watering cuisine, and comfortable accommodation, not to mention casinos, spas, bars, lounges, nightclubs, kids' clubs and swimming pools - the list goes on and on!

Of course, when you book a journey on the Liberty of the Seas, you won't just enjoy the ship's comfort and various amenities. As part of the Royal Caribbean fleet, the vessel also boasts world-class service and benefits from the expertise gained by more than 40 years of experience. In fact, as soon as you step on-board any of the company's 42 ships, there's no question why the cruise line is a global leader in cruise holidays.

The Liberty of the Seas was built in Finland and sails under the Bahamas flag. It embarked on its maiden voyage in 2007 and its first port of call was in Southampton for a promotional visit. It then travelled across the Atlantic and was based at Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Florida, from where it provided regular voyages to the Caribbean.

After having undergone an extensive refurbishment in early 2011, the Liberty of the Seas travelled back across the Atlantic to provide summer tours of the Mediterranean. Sailing between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, it is now the largest cruise ship in Europe. During winter months, the vessel returns to Florida for Caribbean cruises.

Food, cuisine and dining

The main dining room on the Liberty of the Seas has three levels named after Renaissance painters Michelangelo, Botticelli and Rembrandt. They are connected by a glorious staircase, which occasionally doubles as a stage for singing and dancing acts and mealtime entertainment.

If you're looking for fine dining in a quiet setting, why not treat yourself to dinner at Portofino? Decorated in a sumptuous art deco style, the restaurant features massive windows that look out to sea, making it the perfect setting for a romantic meal. Options include Euro-Italian fare such as antipasti, pasta, soups and salads and various entrees, as well as luxurious desserts sure to tickle your taste buds.

Whether you're looking for a full meal or a bit of a snack, you could also choose from:
• Promenade Cafe
• Sorrento's Pizzeria
• Windjammer Buffet
• Island Grill
• Chops Grille
• Ben and Jerry's
• Sprinkles
• The Cupcake Cupboard
• Squeeze Juice Bar
A kid-friendly choice is Johnny Rockets, a 1950s-style American cafe serving burgers and milkshake. There's even a jukebox, allowing you to choose your favourite classic tunes - The Beach Boys, Buddy Holly and The Temptations are just a few of the options.

On-board entertainment and activities

From the moment you step on-board the Liberty of the Seas, you'll realise just how much there is to keep you busy during your voyage - no matter what your interests or age group.

There are plenty of kid-friendly activities, including a children's club and a teen hangout, not to mention the various sports, games, films and shows on offer.

Of course, adults haven't been forgotten and options range from comedy clubs, bingo and karaoke, through to trendy bars, swanky jazz lounges and night clubs where you can dance until the early hours of the morning. Or why not try to win some money at a poker table or slot machine at Casino Royale?

One of the many night clubs on offer is the Catacombs. With its gothic theme, the club is decorated with stained glass windows, pointed arches and dark coloured furniture. There are two bars with a large dance floor and the doors open at 22:00.

Alternatively, head to the top deck to experience the open-air night club where you can enjoy the fresh air and party under the stars. From this vantage point, you'll be able to take in the breathtaking views of the rest of the ship, with its bright lights and colourful decorations on full display.

Spas and fitness facilities

The large day spa and fitness centre offers a wide range of options for guests looking to get a bit of a workout or find some peaceful relaxation.

Unwind with some heat therapy in a steam room, sauna or whirlpool. You can also choose from various spa treatments during your cruise, with options including hot stone massage, Swedish massage, aromatherapy or a facial.

To get your blood pumping, there's a fitness suite on-board, which includes cardio and resistance machines, as well as exercise classes. Or why not try some of the active sports that are available? Golfing, skating, surfing and swimming are just some of the options to choose from.

Cabins

When selecting your cruise accommodation, location is an important consideration and you'll have various options to choose from. As well as the general location on the ship - fore, aft, port, starboard - you should also consider what you'll be looking at from your window or balcony (or, indeed, if you want a view at all!).

For example, do you want the sweeping views of the open sea? This can be a very romantic option - and very peaceful. Alternatively, a room overlooking the central promenade will give you a glimpse of what's happening on-deck, so you won't miss a moment of excitement, even when you're relaxing in your cabin.

On the Freedom of the Seas, there are 1,187 staterooms. These vary in size, amenities and price - with 14 different categories and 21 price grades.

Some of the finest suites are equipped with walk-in closets, king-size beds, dining areas and large seating areas. Meanwhile, the more basic accommodation is cosier, with twin beds that can be made into queen-size beds and adequate storage space for your belongings.

Whichever option you choose, every room comes with a flat screen television, private bathroom, a personal safe and a satellite telephone.
