My wife and I have just returned from Far East back to back cruises out of Hong Kong visiting Thaiwan and Vietnam .
My first impression of a tired ship proved to be accurate. The itinery was good although there wasn't much to do on the first crusie to Thaiwan but things improved significantly on the second cruise to Sanya in China and the two vietnam stops.
The itinery was definately the most positive thing about the whole holiday.
The ship was dated and in my opinion has been put out to pasture in the Far East as it definately is not up to a standard which would be accepted by for example American passengers .
Entertainment : At best amateurish . They had an " international " female singer who seemed incapable of singing in English. One evening they had a double bill of an Illusionist and a magician .The formers act seemed to centre around a pathetic plate spinning routine .He managed to drop more plates than a waiter at a Greek wedding. Similarly the French magicain managed to drop as many of the cards that he produced from out of the air than his illusionist colleague. On one evening they had the cheek to put on Angels and Demonds in the main theatre ( with Chinse subtitles) and call that acceptable evening entertainment. They had acouple of production shows which were absolutely average withn the possible exception of a Strictly Come Dancing clone .This " entertainment " programme was repeated on the second week.
Food : Very poor in the buffet during the first week probably due to the large numbers of Chinese on board this improved somewhat on the second week no doubt due to the presence of significant numbers of Japanes guests and more Brits.
The dining room food was absolutely average , no beef wellington or lobster during the fortnight. Although you could get salmon or a steak every night , the standard feel well below P& O or Princess Standard. The waiter service was mixed and it wasn't until the second week that we were offered a wine package. The cheapest bottle of wine I could find was $28 + 15% cratuity and was typical British supermarket 3 for £10 quality , a total rip off.
Drinks were also expensive with the hated 15% gratuity on top which probably explained their ferrocious alcohol seisure pollicy.
All glass bottles of spirit hidden in cases were detected and remove for collection at the end during embarkation .They also forbad the bringing onboard of wine and beer, Even small cans of lager were removed from hand luggage after shore visits.
The shore excursion information was a joke .They had a very limited desk opening which led to long queues.
The quality of service at the Pursers desk was very poor with complaints being met with a sudden loss of English understanding.
Ther was a total absence of a newspaper such as those distributed by P&O and Princess . The daily on board entertainment particulary on sea days was very limited and seemed to consist mainly of sales of merchandice such as watches and clothing no doubt sourced from Hong Kong.
As you can see the ship dosen't have much going for it apart from the ininerary which was good.
There was much choking on food when they announced on the last night that " hot from the press" Legend had been voted the best ship in the fleet . If I believed that this was the case I would be cancelling the Transatlantic cruise I have booked on the Independance of the Seas in April.
As a frequent cruisers for whom this was our first experience of Royal Caribbean if Independance is not significantly better then we won,t be back with them in a hurry.
I would put the experience just above Costa who I would't take a free crusie from ever again.

So sad you had such a disapointing time, I really hope you have a much better experience on your transatlantic cruise you have booked on the Independence of the Seas in April, we have been on Independence a few times, she is always very clean, staff/crew always seem poliet and friendly plus there is more to do with better facilities onboard...
