We decided to give cruising a miss in 2009 as the past 4 years we had two a year and decided on a change. We went to all the travel agents and looked at hundreds of destinations but there was nothing that suited, so we returned to our agent we always book with for some help..... That morning she had big reductions on two med cruises, The Brilliance from Barcelona and The Legend from Rome, how could we resist but what itinerary!! After a quick look it was an obvious choice, it had to be The Legend.
This was based on the ports of call and the fact that we had sailed on all the voyager and freedom class ships and everyone we had met on our many cruises recommended smaller ships, especially The Legend.
Our agent recommended the cruise only and we picked up an ocean view on deck 2 for £947 p/p so we booked up and made our way home to look for flights, this was the fun part as we booked mid July for an august departure, but still managed to get 2 returns to Rome for under £300!
As we had sailed from Civitavecchia a few times cruise only, we knew how to get to the port by train and what b and b to stay on the night before!
Our first impression of the ship was "WOW...... IT'S TINY"!! The check in was effortless and as we are diamond members we had express check in and was on the ship and having a beer within 20 mins, our cases arrived about 2 hours later!
Our cabin was light and airy, it had all the space we needed as for us its someware to sleep, wash and get ready!
I do find so many people complain about cabin space... why!! It’s for sleeping in, not throwing grand balls and gala dinners!!
The rest of the day we spent exploring the ship and playing mini golf before going for the obligatory muster drill and then on to watch the sail away.
The ports of call we visited were Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu, Alexandria, Naples, Kusadasi!
We organised our own tours in kusadasi and Naples and went with friends we had met on another website, which saved us a fortune and booked a ships tour in Alexandria for safety reasons. As we done a tour on every stop on our last cruise on the Navigator we decided on only booking the three tours and make our own way in the other ports.
Mykonos is a fantastic island and just to walk around the narrow cobbled streets is a fantastic day in itself, Athens we visited the year previous and done the full tour so just went shopping in the palaka and through the main town, Alexandria we took the ships Pyramids and Nile cruise tour, which is very expensive but well worth the money, I loved this stop but many people on the ship hated it for their own reasons. Corfu and Rhodes were just beach days as we done so much at the other ports!
Considering the ship was 14 years old, it was in good condition and very well looked after; there were some glitches but none too big to write about. The food was fantastic and in a way a bit limited but I have noticed in the 5 years that I have been cruising (I am only 26) the menus have not offered the range they used to, but that does not bother me at all, there is always a wide choice of fresh food and I have never had a complaint!
Overall we had a great holiday, I loved The Legend, her staff and we met some fantastic people, my girlfriend still likes bigger ships and was not sure about the Centrum so I have booked the ruby princess for our next cruise in July 10 as it’s my favourite ship and the Independence for September 10 as it’s her birthday and she gets the choice!
