Independence of the Seas

OVERVIEW: This ship’s ‘wow’ factor is its connection with water in the design of a dramatic water theme park on the pool deck – recommended for families with children. It is now based year-round in the UK for cruises from Southampton, although the onboard currency remains the US dollar, which makes

This was our first time on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship and we found Independence of the Seas to be a fantastic ship with plenty to do on board. The staff were all polite and not too much "in your face" as we have found on other ships.

The ship is huge with an amazing layout and design to maximise the use of the space. The most impressive thing about this ship is that, whilst it is the second largest ship in the world at present, we felt no movement at any time (admittedly we were only travelling around Norway and the sea was calm).

The food quality and choice was first class as were the choice of dining locations. We particularly enjoyed having late night pizza slices in the Royal Promenade cafe. Our main restaurant was the Romeo & Juliet on level 3 and it is huge but the service is very slick and there are more than enough staff to serve everyone efficiently. We particularly enjoyed the staff sing song on the stairs on a couple of nights.

There are lots of entertainment options for all age groups and we particularly enjoyed climbing the Wall and attending the nightly shows at the theatre. No matter what age you are there really is something for everyone. Also, all age groups were able to mingle freely and get on with each other with no complaints (or even any screaming babies).

As usual on ships (unless you book a suite) the cabins are compact and, whilst the balcony cabin we had was smaller than we have previously enjoyed with Cunard, it made better use of space e.g. cupboard space behind mirrors and a foldable hanging rail in the wardrobe.

We stayed in cabin 6710 which is located on the aft but, contrary to some reviews I have read, we could not hear any noise from the kitchens and there was no vibration. In fact, we would recommend this cabin as you get a larger balcony than the standard and because it is near the presidential suite your state room attendant is first class.

Overall there were things we loved (the food, the quality/ambiance, the service from staff, the ice show, the entertainment choice) and things we did not (sales pitches in the spa, getting a seat at the popular shows, the art gallery choice).

Mostly we loved this ship and the experience it provided and for value for money it would be very hard to beat.
