Independence of the Seas

OVERVIEW: This ship’s ‘wow’ factor is its connection with water in the design of a dramatic water theme park on the pool deck – recommended for families with children. It is now based year-round in the UK for cruises from Southampton, although the onboard currency remains the US dollar, which makes

We have recently returned from a cruise to Madeira and the Canaries on The Independence ofhe Seas.We were slightly anxious about travelling on such a large ship following a cruise on the Ventura last September but as this was a late decision to escape our dreadful summer we were prepared to take the risk! We found this ship a far more stable ship, particularly as conditions were very windy crossing The Bay of Biscay, both ways! Although over 3000 guests were on board ,we never really felt "crowded" and found moving around quite easy.No real problems with reserved loungers or seats in the theatre, but maybe that was because we got there early. The ship seemed very open and spacious on deck and around the pool areas. Our cabin on deck 3 proved an excellent choice as regards access to dining rooms, lifts and the Promenade. We enjoyed going to the cafe on the Promenade for a coffee after the Theatre Shows, but often there were few seats left as some guests seemed to sit and chat without imbibing!
The entertainment was excellent. The ship's troupe & visiting acts were first class. The East Coast Boys wre brilliant. The Ice Show was very special indeed.
Food was of a high quality. Windjammer provided very wide choice for lunch with very friendly attentive staff. We dined in Macbeth which is light & airy again with great staff. The menu was fine, offering extensive choice but there was an over emphasis on beef & more variety of fish would have been welcomed.
Our cabin steward, Roman, was friendly and did a great job looking after us.
Overall we were very pleased and will be happy to sail on IOS again.

Thanks for the comment about the Ventura - I found her very unstable and my husband who is a Sea Fisherman swore for days that I was making it up until I took him to one of the shops where she was making huge creaking noises when she moved - he had to spend money by way of apology!!!. We go on Independence in November to Madeira and the Canaries from Southampton having only ever sailed with Cunard and P & O.

Hi, we have just returned from ios too and had a fantastic time, but i agree with you about cafe promenade we visited every morning prefaring to have a continental breakfast here.On sea days the cafe would get really busy and it did annoy me that people used it as a place just to sit and chat long after they had finished their coffee, some even used to just sit in the sofas reading their books, with the other areas on the ship that were more suitable to this i did think it was rather selfish, but this was my only gripe, the holiday was great and we are looking to book for next year too .
