Regent Seven Seas Voyager's cruise of the Norwegian fiords this june/july was fantastic from start to finish. We have been on the ship twice before ( Baltic and Eastern mediterranean last year . We loved the first cruise so much booked the next one for two months later immediately !!) WE knew even the basic cabins were fabulous , spacious with a walkin closet, balcony, large bathroom with both shower and separate bath, a large very comfortable bed and separate seating area. We knew the foos would be good and the all inclusive drinks a pleasure !! We knew the service would be excellent and , this year, nearly all excursions were included in the price too. Captian Dag has his own following among the RSSC cruisers , and there were many regulars on this cruise ( only runs once each year ). There were a few special Captain Dag extra's, we sailed into the Troll fiord which few boats of our size and tonnaage could ( the steering system on the Voyager makes it possible apparently ) and that was magical as we very gently edged into the high sided narrow fjord nearly all passengers and crew were on board to watch and cheer ! We stopped while the crew bought fish directly from a fishing boat and tendered off to buy fresh waffles from a small coastal bakers. Captain Dag also held a garden party at his own home. All nice touches. But the best pasrt of this cruise, was the scenery and the wonderful weather. Fantastic scenery surrounded us as we slid through it , among small coastal islands, up beautiful fjords , and along the amazing coast line. I think we covered the 'ground'( sea, water ) that the coastal Hurtigen ferry travels but with longer stops at the main towns /cities ( Bergen, Oslo, etc ) and in a higher level of comfort . Swimming in the ship's pool while we sailed past the Artic Circle, sunbathing while drinking poolside cocktails was very nice, self indulgent to the point of decadence ! Draw backs, a few. The weather broke on the last day or two of the 14 day cruise. The clientle was at least 80% American ( compared to the earleir two cruises we took on the same ship last year ) and although friendly (generally) and polite ( mostly ) they were more interested in each other than the few Europeans on board. The age group was also quite a bit older than our previous two cruises with RSSC. The Cruise itself was ideal for the less mobile as so much beauty could be seen from the ship you didn't need to get off, but if you did ( and we did ) there was some energetic hikes as well as site seeing to extend the mind and body. Good guest lecturers too.
Don't sail with RSSC if you want large 'shows' they have a smallish theatre and cast of dancers/singers. Don't go if you want a very English cruise with fantastic afternoon tea. ( they do it but American style ) Do go if you want a very very nice cabin with food and drinks to match and very friendly and efficient service to a high standard. The ship is small enough for the staff to remember your names and your favourite place to sit, drink to drink , how you like your tea etc. It has 'free ' seating , open dining and very good steak, beef and fish to eat. WE will go with them again, but also look at other lines with the same 'baseline' standard. A true 5 star ship.
Quality of Food5
The steaks were superb, as were all fish and meat dishes. Quantities enormous in the Prime Seven samller didning room, but at no extra cost you could have a full lobster ! Caviar and many 'luxury' foods at all restaurants and at breakfast. good range of fruit as well. Like most cruises , you would struggle not to put on weight as so much temptation.
Entertainment3
No really big scale shows. The crew put one on at the last night which was a lot of fun. The smaller entertainment was good a varied. A great classical musician, an good quartet and some lively song and dancing. But not a strength as such. BUt most of the passengers prefered the entertainment of the view, and talking to each other . A very friendly cruise environment.
Shore Excursions4
A day trip between the head of two fjords which not only gave us great views but also took to a glacier where people where skiing in bikins in the sun. As the trips were free we took quite a few. Most great, and the guides told us a lot about Norway. Most tours only as good as the guide though and one in Oslo was awful so we jumped 'coach' and did it ourselves.
Staff5
The head waitress of the Compass Rose was amazing. So efficient and friendly. She remembered people's preferences and arranged with room service things we never even thought of having but which helped our stay considerably.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Swimming pool, organised games indoors and out, quizzes, well equipped gym, tennis court, golf putting range , jogging track, table tennis. No one, even the children who were there ever seem bored.
Cabins5
wonderful !!!! large, well equipped, flat screen tv with free films etc. large very comfy queen sized bed, good sized sitting room area, large walk in closet |( a dream |!!! ) and great bathroom, walk in shower, separate bath. very good sized bathroom. Fridge is stocked each day with beer, 'sodas' ater and fresh ice. Champagne greets you. Fruit bowl re stocked daily. Bottles of water available at each exit when the ship docks, as are umbrellas for your use if needed. ALL INCLUDED .
