Public Health Queen Mary 2

Cruise Line: Cunard Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Queen Mary 2 Sailed: December, 2007
Destination: Caribbean Age: 46-55
In April 2006 my wife and I made a booking with the Cunard Line to travel on the Chrisymas and New Year Cruise deaprting 20th December from New Yorks to the Caribbean.

The booking was confirmed by Cunard on the 19th April 2006, some twenty (20) months before departure.

Second seating dining in the Britannia Restaraunt was confirmed in writing on the booking document received from Cunard in April 2006

My wife and I believed that it was reasonable to expect what we paid for in relation to the dining arrangements particulary when we had made the reservation for second seating dining in twenty months before sailing would be provided

At the time of booking both the travel agent and I agreed the booking would only be made on the strict understanding that second seating dining would be provided

Had it not we would have travelled on another ship

On arrival on board we discovered that we had been allocated first seating dining

Cunrd have since informed us that 140 people were over booked for second sitting dining on the cruise

On arrival at the ship terminal my wife and I noted that many passemgers were suffering from the effects of flu symptoms

We were required by Cunard to sign the mandatory declaration that we were fit enough to travel before being allowed to embark

As the cruise progressed issues in relation to health matters deteriorated

My wife and I contracted a an acute respiratory infection which was diagnosed by the Ships Medical Officer and a course of antibiotics was prescribed

The hygiene arrangements in the Kings Court Buffet Area on the ship were inadequate

The majorty of the hand sanitizer machines were faulty

Crew members and passengers were coughing and sneezing over the food on display, cooks were answering the telephone and writing reports whilst serving food without washing their hands

Passemgers were visiting the buffet areas without washing their hands from the open decks, some were in wet swimwear and others had nothing on their feet

Many were suffering from cold and flu symptoms

Despite the obvious fact that many on board the ship were suffering from flu symptoms the Cunard Line did not increase hygiene arrangements, nor provide warnings of the danger of contracting flu either in the daily newspaper or on the daily TV Show presented by the Cruise Director

In fact the main thrust of te Cruise Directors daily TV Show was to promote the sale of diamonds in local stores in the Caribbean who were recommended by Cunard

MORALE OF THE STORY

The points registered are recorded in brief

The details of the hardships and problems endured are extensive and have been fully recorded in writing to the Cunard Line

I have since January 2008 been in correspondence with the Cunard Line over the problems that my wife and I have endured

The response from the Cunard has been negative and unhelpful

They refuse to answer detailed specific complaints refuse to enter into dialouge and refused to seek mediation via ABTA, who are basically powerless to act

The matter has now reached a point where Court Proceedings have been instigated in the County Court

I strongly recommend that anyone travelling with the Cunard Line ensures that they receive confirmation in writing that they will receive what they have paid for prior to embarkig the ship

I would also be interested to know if any readers were on the same cruise and witnessed or suffered any of the events that I have described

The majority of the cruise was spent in bed suffering from the infection that we had been infected with

I agree. I found the same attitude in January 08. The hygiene arrangements at the KC Buffet were poor with little or no evidence of "working" gel dispensers - plenty of faulty and empty ones! The main problem with the buffet was the disorganisation and subsequent long queues- right outside and around the stairs at times!! They didn't seem to realize that when coaches return from morning trips etc, guests will pile into the Buffet for late lunch because the Britannia restaurant was closed!!! - and how long have they been doing voyages and cruises ??? How difficult would it have been to keep the Britannia retaurant open for longer to take the pressure off the KC Buffet? they do the same trips on every island so must know the return times by now? - my suggestion fell on deaf ears I'm afraid. It was like the Headmaster saying " We know best how to do things" - Yeah so did Gerald Ratner!!! and soon to be WOOLWORTHS no more!

Thank You for your comments As stated in my review I have instigated Court Proceedings against Carnival plc I would be grateful if you would correspond with me re your experiences in the Kings Court Buffet Area It would be realy helpful to demonstrate continuity of poor public health hygiene on the following cruise to the one that I travelled on Please make a comment if you are willing to discuss this matter, if so I will post my email address for your attention

My experiences were pretty much as stated above and in my own review of around 25th Feb 2008. I really must say that the overall cleanliness of the ship was pretty good. Although the crew were not as attentive to the toilets as they are on Princess. On one occasion in particular, someone had had a major "accident" in the toilet next to the buffet - it was a considerable time before it was attended to. I also noticed that the timed inspection sheets on the walls of the toilets were often hours unchecked. On our return in January I wrote several letters of complaint marked P&C to the President of Cunard. Eventually after insisting that my complaint be at least acknowleged by the President herself, not some underling, as it had been addressed to her personally, she did reply. My comments and constructive suggestions seemed to be of no interest to her. Her letter was one purely of "head in Sand" defence with the usual " We are Cunard, with over 100 years experience we know best" - I'm sure old F W Woolworth would be turning in his grave hearing of such an arrogant attitude from a so called business manager. In her reply, she offered me the huge sum of £100 each off a future cruise - I was astounded - the opportunity was too good to miss - I immediately rushed to the telephone to book another Cunard voyage - before she changed her mind!

As a matter of interest I checked through other reviews of the QM2 on this website, covering the same period as yours. Throughout the post cruise period of January 2008 there are numerous reviews. The vast majority award 5 stars and are most complimentary to the ship. Indeed, only three reviews came in with three stars and none were lower. In my experience the choice of dining preferences are given in order of booking. As you say, 20 months in advance should, under most circumstances, meet that criteria. You state that you were in possesion of written confirmation regarding your dining preference then later in your review 'strongly recommend that others ensure they have written confirmation'. I'm sorry, but I find it difficult to believe that, under these circumstances, the maitre 'd of the Brittania Restaurant would not have been more obliging had you approached him in a reasonable manner.

Thank You for your comments The Maitre'de did his best to help us but unfortunatly he could not satisfy the demand from 140 people who had been over booked by Cunard Line for second seating dinner For your information my wife and I formed an excellent relationship with the Maitre 'De who actually lives in the West Yorkshire Town of Brighouse which is about eight miles from my home As you can imagine he and I had much in common and got on well May I suggest that you limit any future comments to factual issues and not what you may perceive to have taken place

Thank you for your suggestion but I was under the impression I had been factual by looking at a similar period of reviews and commenting on them. You had not mentioned your relationship with the Maitre 'd in your main review, hence I was, in your words, attempting ...'to assist other cruise passengers who may encounter similar problems'. I will just reiterate for the record. I have every sympathy with you over the 'second sitting' dining issue. I personally place great store in my cruise dining arrangements. Had I been in possession of written confirmation to that effect I would not have let the matter rest either. I am sure, though, that both of us are aware that all cruise lines operating two sitting dining have their get out clause: Cunard's appears in paragraph 5 of 'Booking your Holiday. Happier cruising in futuer.Richard

As you well know Richard, I disagree with your many of your thoughts regarding QM2. Regarding your comments ref: Hoyland review, you are incorrect. My own review dated 25th February 08 regarding our voyage in January 08 " The Three Queens" similarly awarded only ONE STAR. - and strangely enough to date there has been not even one comment to disagree with me!?? CUNARD - "WE'RE NOT AS GOOD AS WE THINK WE ARE!"

I did say I checked through other reviews, quote " Throughout the post cruise period of January 2008 " which were numerous. Sorry I didn't broaden my parameters and I hope you will not now accuse me of being 'selective' in my research. I do, of course, empathise with you on a number of your comments, particularly regarding the Brittania Restaurant and smoking. I guess we will both remain on opposite sides of the Cunard debate though: each to their own view. Neverthe ess, I enjoy your inputs and maybe our paths will cross when I migrate back to P&O for a few cruises in 2009. Regards and happy cruising. Richard

Unfortunately if you travel in December people are likely to have coughs and colds. If people cancelled their cruises for this reason I doubt their insurance would pay up.

Thank You for your advice on coughs and colds. The responsibilities of manageing the companys of which I am a director preclude me from taking holidays other than during the Christmas and New Year periods I have responsibilities to my work force Unfortunatly my wife does not enjoy the best of health, she suffers from chrones disease and has a leaking blood vessel o the right side of the brain I think you will agree that everybody needs a holiday at least once per year If we did not go away in December we would not have a holiday and something to look forward to The issues recorded in my review relate to the Cunard Line failing to implement basic cruise industry public hygiene arrangements even though they were fully aware of an acute respiratory infection that had infected a considerable number of individuals on board
