What no coffee?

Opera - We took a transatlantic cruise on this ship from Venice to Rio De Janeiro in October/November 2009 and were very impressed with the cleanliness and superb decor of the ship, shows, cabin and excursions. The only let down was the selection of food in the dining room. Although chicken, fish and steak could be ordered every night, the food on the theme nights (every night) gave restricted options and not, quite frequently, to our taste. There was no theme night for Great Britain and when we enquired of the staff why we had not been included they replied that Britain encompassed all the different menus. However, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding was never on the menu. Also, no jug of water was allowed on the table for dinner or lunch. You had to buy bottles which were placed on the table. Not very elegant. However, you could have a jug of water on the table for breakfast if requested, presumably for the clientele to take their tablets. The other main gripe was the fact that coffee after lunch and dinner had to be paid for and no tea and coffee making facilities in the cabins. The shows were excellent particularly considering that there were so many mixed nationalities, offering a well rounded cultural and modern programme. However, we would highly recommend a cruise on MSC even though one has to pay extra for water and coffee at all times apart from breakfast.
Quality of Food4
Main Dining Room/Fish avoiding pasta as much as possible.
Entertainment5
The Opera nights were superb but we did not care for the the Brazilian Kick Box Dancers
Shore Excursions4
Buzios was the most lovely place we visited but Recife was not to our taste.
Staff5
Jac, our table waiter, and his assistant, could not do enough for us. Very helpful and attentive and appeared to enjoy his job.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities3
We played golf or deck shuffle board every sea day with other passengers and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cabins5
Our cabin was very well appointed and loved the balcony apart from when the couple in the next cabin smoked on their balcony, which was forbidden.

its true the continentals dont have an obsession with tea and coffee all day long and that is why these ships dont offer it. lots of italians though do have coffee after dinner so wonder why costa and msc dont do it. but the rest of the cruise seemed good - chalk one up for msc. we went on the opera last year to the fjords and enjoyed every minute, though i admit i dont ever drink tea or coffee and my hubby just has one cup of tea with breakfast.

The thing is, this is an Italian cruise line with Italian styling. Italians don't have the British obsession with frequent hot beverages and don't really understand it. Your comments about a 'British' theme night left me puzzled - British food is rather dull and I can't imagine expecting to see it on a foreign ship's menu.

Good British food is the equal of anything. Bad British food is, however, far more common and far less appealing!
