Thoughts of a cruise virgin!

This was our first ever cruise, leaving from Southampton, touring the Med and returning to Southampton. It was an amazing experience and one that stays with me. The ship was luxurious and the variety and standard of food was stupendous. To be honest I found the three days at sea to and from Southampton to be confining. It was like being trapped in a luxury hotel for three days. In future I would choose a cruise that arrived at it's first destination in 24 hours - flying if necessary. Having said that, the onboard activities were extremely varied and it was quite easy to fill time at sea. Our teenage boys also had a great time, enjoyed the food and discos and made friends with others during sporting activities.
The shows were spectacular, I recall that we saw four different shows over two weeks. There were also cabaret acts in the lounge area which provided variety. We also enjoyed the at sea enhancement talks which were highly entertaining.
The port talks were informative, but for me the time spent in each location was not long enough. I enjoy exploring an area and there was simply not time to do this. Our appetite was whetted though and we have sine been back to Sorrento and will return to Barcelona.
It was difficult adjusting to a cashless environment and very easy to run up a large bill enjoying the tempting cocktails on offer. Be prepared for an additional bill at the end of a cruise.
Slightly aprehensive about motion sickness which is why we chose a large ship. In fact it was not a problem even in stormy weather and sleeping on board was a delight.

Overall we enjoyed the experience and would certainly cruise again although we will be careful in our selection of ship and destinations.

Do feel sea days take some time to get used to, so best to start with only one or two and then on the next cruise a few more etc.,

What dates are you going on in May? are you doing the 29th May for 2 weeks. Went on Oceana in September 2008 to the Canaries with my husband and then 4 year old son. He absolutely loved it as did we. Cabins very good and enough room for 3, drinks prices are just pub prices. Maybe see you on board.

I must admit, I have come to look forward to sea days - lie in in the morning, leisurely breakfast, dance class, morning coffee, sunbathe with book, lunch at Bordeaux (on Aurora), spa appointment, afternoon tea, more reading and relaxing. I usually manage a session at the gym too (got to if attending afternoon tea regularly). Then plenty of time to get ready for first sitting. Going on Aurora for 17 days (nine at sea) in July. Already looking for suitable books to take to read...

For all your enjoyment of the experience, I note that you have not cruised again in the past four and a half years!

We will cruise again but at the moment there is so much of the world to see and explore that we feel the cruise option does not give us this opportunity. When we find the physical exploration too much I'm sure that we will revert to cruising. A relaxing and luxurious way of seeing the world!

Love your comments which come from an obvious first-timer but your first cruise is often one of the best you will ever do. Many things get better as you become more accustomed to cruise life but the excitement and novelty of that first cruise remains with you. Well done, well said and many more of them in the future. .......Neil

Good points, well made! I do know what you mean about flying to destinations, as days at sea are a bit of an acquired taste.
