£75 for engine trouble on Gateways and Gondolas

Our first time on OV2, but it seemed almost identical to OV1. Problems on day 2 as an engine played up, meaning we went so slowly we had to miss Dubrovnik in order to get to Venice on time. Some passengers were unhappy with this. But once the problem was sorted, OV managed to find a slot at Dubrovnik two days late and so it was Korcula we missed out on instead - a pretty town but it probably wouldn't have been the highlight of anyone's trip. In compensation, everyone had £75 credited to their onboard account - reasonable enough if you planned on spending that much on drinks, the fancier restaurants, shore excursions etc. Those who didn't may have to demand more realistic compensation.

On the plus side, we missed out on all the bad weather that had been forecast. Venice was misty on arrival and had a little flooding around the cathedral; the rest of the week was dry and hot. Zakynthos was the only place where a tender was used. You could buy transport into town from the docks in Venice, Dubrovnik and Corfu; those in Heraklion and Zakynthos were within walking distance. Apart from a Knossos tour in Heraklion, to fill in the time before disembarkation, we just did our own thing and saw plenty. All these towns are very walkable. Cameras are supposedly banned in St Mark's and the Fenice theatre in Venice, the brochure warned, but this was barely enforced.

The ship was well kept and fairly spacious - they claimed it was full; I'm not so sure, as it was almost always possible to find sunlounger space. We dined in the Bistro (to use up some of our £75) but found the steak chewy; the lasagne in La Luna was great. Extra fees were £15 in the Bistro, a lot for chewy meat, and £4.75 in La Luna for dinner, well worth it. There was a lot of jollification around the pools during the day, though not as much as I've heard on OV1. Someone was pilloried a few weeks back for saying it was too noisy, but he was right: at its worst it is very rowdy and I had to plug in my iPod to shut it out. We skipped most of the entertainment on board, but there seemed to be plenty for all tastes.

I had read reviews saying that transfers at Heraklion airport could be a nightmare. But they ran smoothly both on arrival - we were whisked to the ship very quickly - and departure, where we were checked in while still on the ship (it would have been even quicker if the airline staff had arrived on time, but no great problem). However, air traffic control strikes in Heraklion meant outbound flights ran half an hour or so late.

Enjoyable? Yes, very; and inexpensive too (booked through this website). It's a shame Britain is losing the OVs. Anyone know what the best alternatives will be?
Quality of Food4
Free restaurants were all good and so was La Luna; not so impressed with our Bistro meal.

You can do your own thing at all these ports, though to get out of town it's probably best to book an excursion, which isn't cheap.

I agree with allyou have to dsay - we have sailed on OV2 and 1 and this last cruise hs to be our worst. I have also been criticised for my views - isn't that what this is for?? Thanks for an honest review, it's nice to know some folk are not afraid to speak their mind.

Firstly thanks for a fair informative review. I have been on OV2 twice and am booked to go again in September and on OV1 in February. I have had a lovely time so far but am always a bit dubious about putting reviews on here because of people criticising things that are my own personal views which is exactly what has happened here - what business is it of anyone elses what Westbrooke spends his money on?

Thanks, Arnold. I guess money will always be a touchy subject (nobody would have batted an eyelid if I'd just said I'd caught norovirus!) but I thought people might like to know exactly what happened when a port had to be missed out. I enjoyed the cruise anyway and I hope you do too.

Do I assume that you saw no staff whatsover when you were on board or that you received any service from any member of the crew by your not applicable rating to the staff? Fair point for all the others but surely somebody somewhere must have offered you some kind of service whilst on board.

When we ordered a drink or dinner it was brought to us. The cabin was cleaned when we weren't there. When we asked about transport into Venice, we were given the wrong answer. I can't think of a useful way of rating any of this: people did their jobs - except in the case of the Venice inquiry, and I didn't want to criticise anyone over that, as mistakes and misunderstandings do happen. It wasn't great, it wasn't dreadful; and to award, say, three stars doesn't really tell anyone anything useful. So n/a really means 'nothing noteworthy to say'.

May I ask how on earth you manage to cruise without spending as much as £75 on board?

As Walker says, you don't have to spend money. Tips are included on OV; so are meals, though you can pay extra to have dinner in La Luna and the Bistro. In all the ports on this trip it was possible, and in fact easy, to go ashore and see the sights on your own, which we did. Given the weather, you'll orobably want to have some drinks - £1.25 for a can of Coke, and I think about £4 or so for spirit mixer or a cocktail. I had plenty to drink, mostly non-alcoholic, but didn't come anywhere near spending £75 on it.

It seems very strange that you can go on "holiday" and not spend anything! You didn't have water in your cabin? You didn't try a speciality coffee or cake at Charlies? You didn't go to the Bistro or La Luna other than to spend your on-board credit? You didn't use the Spa, or Sauna, or Steam room? Or treat yourself in anyway? Also - can I add - that while "tips are included" it IS customary to tip your cabin steward and any waiters who have served you well. But then again you didn't buy anything to be served! It must have been a hoot!

I'm a quiet soul, Poole! I don't do spas. I liked the free food in the buffet restaurants. I've tried specialty cakes before on OV and thought they were just ok, so I didn't this time. But I think you miss the point about 'not spending anything': I did spend - I paid the fare, just as I might on any non-mobile resort holiday: I bought souvenirs and had the odd meal ashore. What I like about cruising is the destinations, not the 'treats', and they come free(ish). The rest of the time I just flop by the pool with a book of sudokus. Not everyone's idea of a hoot, I expect, but it's a good holiday for me. The money I save, I spend on other cruises. 'while "tips are included" it IS customary to tip your cabin steward and any waiters who have served you well'... well now, is this true? As far as I'm concerned, 'tips are included' means 'tips are included'. If it is customary to tip staff anyway, then tips are not included. (I'd welcome other people's opinions on this.) But it's a side issue, as the tips come out of your wallet, not out of the onboard credit.
