Queen Victoria in the Norwegian Fjords

This was one of several cruises over the years to the Norwegian Fjords - but our first on Queen Victoria. We had previously done several cruises on QE2 and wondered how well QV would compare. We need not have been concerned - the staff were just as friendly, caring and efficient. Even Captain McNaught and Chief Engineer Paul Yeoman from our last QE2 trip were there. The White Star service was much in evidence. Our state room (cabin) had a balcony, as most do and was very comfortable. If we had a (minor) gripe, the bathroom was to say the least, compact - taking a shower usually involved a tussle with the shower curtain - it was all kept immaculate by our steward.
One area of the ship which we were not too happy with was the Britannia Restaurant - we found it a little dark and once a meal started it became extremely noisy - as we were on a table for 10 conversation was difficult. Because of this large number the overall time to take a meal was unusually long especially as the 10 arrived at intervals over half an hour or so thereby slowing down the process. We did persuade the waiter to serve individual couples as they arrived on occasions. We ate breakfast and lunch in the Lido and thoroughly enjoyed what was on offer. Mrs S requires a gluten free diet and on the whole she was well looked after - her treat here was the pizzeria where Jimmy took great delight in concocting delicious sauces for the gluten free pasta as well as toppings for gluten free pizzas. On some cruise ships afternoon tea does not cater for Gluten free (Coeliacs) and we had fond memories of White Glove service in the ballroom on QE2 - QV did us proud - Gluten Free? no problem, Madam - it was all there, finger sandwiches, cakes and scones with cream and raspberry jam - all gluten free and it looked just the same. The service was impeccable.
The entertainment was very good - enhanced by the excellent theatre. The individual acts were excellent as was the Theatre Company with their singing/dancing productions.
We generally take a cruise to the fjords each year and therefore do not now take any tours but visit some of our favourite places/buildings - it maybe a waterfall, a church, the market/quayside at Bergen, a walk by a stream, etc - all the ports of call in the fjords are delightful in their own way and all very well worth while a visit. We are generally blest with good weather and there can be nothing more pleasant than drifting slowly down a fjord on a sunny day just taking in the scenery - those who have visited Geiranger will know what we mean.
We enjoyed our first cruise on QV - QE2 has gone but the traditions have been maintained in QV and hopefully QM2 and QE - pleasures booked but yet to enjoy.
