Cruising the Baltics

Reviewed By: Boyland, Bristol on 30th Jun 2009

Cruise Ship: Arcadia Sailed: June, 2009
Destination: Baltic Age: 46-55
Arcadia is a lovely ship although there were a lot of old people on board during our trip and whilst we do all grow old they did get in the way especially when walking along the deck aisles.

Most locations visited were great including the weather, Oslo, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Brugges although Bremenhaven and Aarhus were below par (would not recommend visiting these 2 places).

If you like adult only ships with old fashioned entertainment this is the ship for you otherwise try a non adult ship from the other P & O fleet or possibly RCI.

Overall very relaxing and enjoyable but needed something extra.

I do love the attitude of somebody who's lived a charmed life by not being disabled themselves, maybe you'll be blessed with mobility problems sometime soon, then you won't be so quick to criticise others. May I suggest you go on RCI Independence of the seas next time, as they all run around at 100 miles an hour and you can go rock climbing as well. watch out for the amputee doing the rock climbing mind he may not be as quick as you!

Sorry you seem to have missed my point completely, I was not critising everyone and merely sought to give my / our honest view(s). Interesting to note your reference about disability as this is something I didn't even mention. You might care to know that I do suffer from arthritis and am in severe pain on occasions, although do try and get on with life. I was trying to say what I thought honestly and this is the last time I will bother to offer my views publicly. You should be aware that I don't discriminate on the grounds of disability, age or anything else it was just my / our observation of some passengers.

I too was on this cruise and have had 81 birthdays. True there was little to do when in port and I have never had this before. The cinema had too few seats. The staff were great but having been on Aurora and Oriana the ship did not compare. For those on their first few cruises their yardstick is different and so it should be.I am sad to read that we oldies got in the way. I for the first time had to use a stick.Dorothy Hettle.

I have also been on both the Aurora and Oriana (twice), and don't really understand your comments? The Arcadia is more modern and more spacious than either of the other two, with many more balcony cabins available. Most importantly, it is child free! I had my first 17 night cruise on Oriana ruined by disruptive children, and their equally disruptive parents. The second was marred by vibration. All the plates and glasses almost vibrated off of the table in the dinning room as we rounded the Isle of Wight on the first evening, and it was noticable in the cabin at night, though to be fair we did have a cabin at the stern of the ship! The Aurora is a lovely ship, but once again is not child free, and a balcony cabin will usually set you back over two grand a peace! The inside cabins are quite small compared with most. I was very happy with the Arcadia and would choose to cruise on her again without hesitation. We already have another cruise booked on the Aurora for 2010, but would definately think twice before returning to the Oriana, however beautiful the ship is to look at. Happy cruising.

Where where were you having to rush to that the older passengers were in your way? Are you asking for some kind of holiday apartheid that protects the likes of you having to be inconvenienced by the horror of having to travel with seniors? Totally agree with the previous comment and looking forward to my next cruise with the geriatrics if allowed!

Whilst I appreciate what you are saying about the elderly (one of which I am fast becoming) I don't go along with your very uncaring attitude about them, nor your comment about them "getting in the way" You make the elderly seem like people who should be shut away, when in fact you should be admiring them for going out and getting a life. All of the people who "got in your way" were young once too, with the same hopes and dreams that you have, remember that when you are in the older age group and have stiff joints and are not able to move as quickly as you would like to. I consider myself very lucky that I am still agile at 65 years of age following multiple health problems, but I still have consideration for those less fortunate, a little caring goes a long way.

Perhaps they should incorporate an OAP lane on the decks so we don't get in the way..Carol

Despite the WW2 comment creaping in, I love the idea of an adults only cruise where you are not subjected to other peoples kids and their antics. However I am nowhere near the walking frame stage etc and would also love a ships that caters to the same type - 35 - 55 or active young olders.

How nice to read a comment from someone from my old home town! We live in Frinton on Sea now,not far from Harwich, and often sail from there. They say harwich for the continent, and frinton for the incontinent......give us old toppies a break !!
