Beware on the Balmoral!

We have just returned from a one week cruise on board Fred Olsen's Balmoral from Dover to Spin, Portugal and Guernsey and while it was OK some aspects fell short of what we have come to expect from a cruise holiday. In particular we were disappointed with the level of customer care, for example do not expect any assistance if you are in a cabin on deck 3 forward (as we were). On two occasions the watertight doors adjacent to our cabin (3022) were shut with no warning. On the first occasion we were unable to get to our cabin (we did try unsuccessfully to find an alternative route) and on asking about this at reception were just told we must wait as this was done for "security" and that we would not be able to have access until 15-20 minutes after the ship had sailed. When I said that there must be another access route because I needed to get to my cabin the response was to ask what sitting I was on for dinner and when I said "2nd", was told "oh, well that's OK then" - well it wasn't! On the second occasion (in the morning around 8 am) we were in our cabin when we heard the mechanism of the watertight door starting to operate (although we were at sea at the time). We questioned the officer closing the door who said that they were shutting the door "for security" and in fact it was almost closed when we approached him. He then had to open the door to allow us to get out but when we asked about an alternative access route to our cabin, he told us in an offhand manner that there wasn't one. As luck would have it the Ship's Doctor was in the vicinity and could not believe what we and another couple were being told so took it on himself to help us find another way to our part of the ship via the crew area. My sister and brother in law in the cabin next door and other passengers on deck 3, were disturbed by the noise of plumbing works being carried out in the early hours (although we were warned of this) and, on the last night by the noise of luggage being unloaded from the lift onto the tiled floor outside their cabin - they said it sounded as if it was being thrown out of the lift (and probably was because one of their cases suffered damage) and the noisy shouted conversation of the crew doing the unloading which we were disturbed by too. My sister actually went to the cabin door to ask how long this noise would continue and to request that the noise was kept down but said that the crew members just smiled and waved with no apology. They also found that some waiting staff in the Palms Cafe were quite rude and offhand in their manner.
It is a fairly pleasant ship and standards of cleanliness were good but the food portions were on the small side (good for the waist but not always enough to satisfy a man sized appetite) and generally disappointing when compared with other cruise lines. Our cabin, despite the above was a good size with loads of storage - far more than any other ship we have been on, but beware if you are tall as my 6' 4" husband found the bed too short for comfort.
As I said, overall our cruise experience was OK, but unless there was a particularly good itinerary or a bargain price I would not necessarily choose to travel with Fred Olsen again, although in comparison with our experience of MSC it was fabulous!
Quality of Food2
Ballindalloch Restaurant - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Palms Cafe - breakfast. Avon Restaurant - lunch.
Entertainment2
Entertainment crew were energetic and good but the guest comedian had a tired repetoire of jokes.
Shore Excursions2
Didn't do the formal excursions but did take the shuttle into Bilbao (£4 each return) and shuttle to Oporto (£14 return).
Staff5
The Ship's Doctor (Tom Moore) as he was the most helpful when we could not access our cabin!
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities2
I went to the origami class (twice), but there is only so much you can get from folding paper! Bingo was good value for money even though I didn't win!
Cabins3
Good size with plenty of storage.

My concern would not be the original problem but with the failure of the crew to deal with your complaint. My friends who own Skokas tell me that the company is very good at handling complaints. It sounds to me like Trabant service. We also faced indiffernce when we had a problem earlier thii year.

Watertight doors are closed when entering or leaving port, during restricted visability, restricted navigational space or in an emergency or during drills - this is mandated by law. It is also law that anyone who is "cut off" from the normal route by a WT door MUST be shown the alternative escape route before departure and it should be clearly marked. Very very few ships sailing nowadays have WT doors in passenger areas but I would write to Fred Olsen as if they did not show you the alternative route they 1. broke the law and 2. potentially threatened your safety.

It's hard to imagine the closure of water-tight doors could ruin your cruise. Inconvenient yes, but surely not significant in the overall experience.

My husband and I were on this cruise and also on deck three. We didn't have any noise problems and no problems with the watertight doors (although we were midship). This was the first time we had cruised with Fred Olsen and we thoroughly enjoyed it.We thought the food was excellent and I mostly had two puddings each evening as I couldn't make up my mind! They didn't seem to mind how many courses you had or if you wanted two if you were hungry.Although the food was pretty continuous throughout the day anyway. We found the staff friendly particularly our cabin attendant. The shows in the Neptune Lounge were fantastic and so professional. We thought the comedian was very funny for most of his act. The Magician we didn't really rate at all. A nice guy but a boring and predictable act. The only gripe we had was with the tender service to Guernsey for which we waited two hours for, leaving us not much time before we had to leave to come back. All in all we had a spacious cabin which was excellent value, great food, marvellous entertainment, friendly staff - and we had good weather too! We would definitely go on a Fred cruise again.

I find it difficult to believe that Pells is describing the same boat as that on which we have just spent two fantastic weeks. Surely, there must be some downside to booking a cabin on Deck 3, otherwise there would be no point in people paying considerably and progressively more for the higher deck cabins. As with most things, you get what you pay for. Deck 3 is partly a passenger deck and partly a service/crew deck and therefore one has to expect some noise from staff carrying out essential services during the night, such as luggage handling on the last night. It is a little unfair to condem Fred Olsen in general terms for this although the experience with the watertight doors does seem rather bizarre.
