we flew to venice the day previously with easy-jet as celebrity could not offer direct flights from our local airports.we stayed in hotel 100 metres from the Rialto bridge and took a private water-taxi to the embarkation pier 90 euros!!! embarkation process went very smoothly as we had preliminary checked -in on line.because of limited mobility i found the walk from check-in to the summit hard going(approx 400 yards)and at1.00pm it was quite warm on boarding we were offered champagne or orange juice.Iwould have been grateful for a seat to enjoy the initial ambience more!We were invited to a buffet in the waterfall cafe which was very varied with lots of "goodies" I thought this was to impress us as new passengers but later realised that this was the normal everyday lun cheon buffet which we enjoyed everyday thereafter. We also ate breakfast daily in the waterfall which was very well organised and had food to satisfy every possible taste or diet.We found our balcony stateroom on deck 7 to be clean and quite spacious and well tended by Lourdes and her assistant.the early morning coffee and fruit juice tray which we ordered by leaving the card provided on the door-handle was always prompt and hot.Glad we chose a balcony-always something to see!We opted for a table of 6 in the cosmopolitan restaurant for dinner and our fellow were all american, experienced cruisers, very amiable and good company. Before the cruise we were a little intimidated about the formal nights-no need -it wasnice to put the tux on and my wife looked stunning in her evening wear,we were both told that we "scrubbed up"well!as did most people, many men wore a dark lounge suit.Dinner itself was a joy, always a wide choice, very well cooked and presented,ANYTHING you fancied was provided by Caesar our waiter and his asst Juan. The 2 brunch days in the restarant were mouthwateringly good and to have the string quartet playing on the balcony was a bonus!
We were prewarnedof the very high prices of drinks although my medication limited me anyway, the soft drink stations were always well stocked and available 24/7.the entertainment venues were comfortable and the variety of shows were satisfactory-some acts were better than others. we went on 5 prebooked excursions-all panoramic tours, very informative guides and comfortable coaches ,but surely overpriced after listening to other passengerswho did similar tours to us but arranged things themselves quayside
It was good that every crew member wore a badge with their name, country of origin, andjob title,Ialso appreciated the level of hygeine(just the swine flu?)aboard with hand gel readily available in toilets and on entering and leaving all dining areas. The ship security team too gave peace of mind when leaving and reboarding the ship especially after a tiring all day tour,to be offered an ice cold towel, and a "welcome home"when your seapass is registered really makes you feel special!!

If we had known that dis-embarkation in Barcelona had been so early(a very smooth operation)08.15 we would have arranged to have flown home that day and not booked an overnight hotel as we found it an anticlimax after we had been "spoilt"by all the crew and staff of Summit.
This was our first cruise and my wife and i both enjoyed it thoroughly and will definitely cruise again!!
PS Iworked as a steward on P&O lines for 3 +years when in my early 20s-SSOrcades, SS Oronsay,SSCanberra,

Glad you enjoyed your cruise on Summit. My family and I are doing the same cruise on 2nd August. Our travel agent arranged flights from and too local airports with Jet2 and Easy Jet on the start and finish dates of our cruise both at 11am. He was also able to arrange transfers with Celebity and as it is a package we are fully covered by ATOL; which would not be the case if we had arranged our own flights. Having just enjoyed a cruise to the North Cape with Fred Olsen on Black Prince I was apprehensive about some of the negative reviews on Summit, although experience tells me that some complaints are petty. You have put my mind at rest.

My family and I are doing this cruise too on Aug 2nd - I have cruised before but only on the Grand Princess - which was excellent. I have 2 friends that have sailed on Summit and they told me that it was very good - and they only sail now with Celebrity (they cruise twice yearly) - it was because of their comments to me that made me try Celebrity - I have read good and bad reports, so I really hope all goes well.
