We had our first ever cruise which was to the Caribbean on Ventura in March. We did the transatlantic because we wanted to spend as much time on-board as on shore. As soon as we boarded we were treated like guest of a five star hotel, we were shown to our cabin and introduced to our cabin steward who was extremely courteous for the whole duration. Our cabin was reasonably spacious with a balcony on Riviera deck which some people did not like as the restaurant above overhung but we did not find this a problem. The personal touches like having the orchid, sweets and chocolates each evening were a bonus making our cruise even more special.
We chose freedom dining as we didn't want to be tied to a particular time, we found that this was the better option for us and the food was equally as good, as was the service than the club dining. The food itself was faultless always hot and perfectly cooked.
Entertainment was fabulous, the evening shows was an eye-opener for the the novice cruiser, the comedians were good , a little bit near the mark on some subjects, although adequate warning was given prior to the start of each show. The musicals in the theatre was as good as you would expect in any major city. Day time entertainment such as adult scaletrix, line dancing and especially the pub quizzes were brilliant, could not fault the entertainment staff at all, we had so much fun with them and felt part of the team having been labelled as Gertie and Bertie(I'm over here Neil) at the bingo sessions.
Activities on board were also very good although we didn't participate in a lot of those just observed from the side-lines, so much to do so little time to do everything.
The excursions we did were well organised although some were a little expensive for what they were. We did snorkeling but if you took your own you could actually do it for free or pay for local boats-men to take you further out to sea. We were torn between the aerial tram or zip-wire on St Lucia and chose the aerial tram thinking we wouldn't see a huge amount zipping through the rain Forrest on a wire, but unbeknown to us you have to travel on the aerial tram to get up to the zip-wire so in theory you can do both for around the same cost so we were a little disappointed at this and did bring it up with P&O when we got back on-board.
All in all we had a fantastic cruise and have already booked up to go again next year.
Quality of Food5
Excellent choice and perfectly cooked
Entertainment4
All entertainment was good but like anything there was something for everyone, but not to everyones taste, if you didn't like it, walk out not just sit there and whinge.
Shore Excursions3
Aerial tram on St Lucia was brill, not to keen on the waterfall trek on Greneda, disappointing and not a huge amount of trekking.
Staff5
Oh most definately the entertainment staff especially Neil Oliver the cruise director, Andy Wiiliams and his fiancee Sarah, Andy Kitchen,Dom and Eddie who was on his first season and doing just fine.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Of what we did do and see they were well organised.
Cabins5
Our cabin was clean and comfortable with lovely feather pillows, it was a good size with ample hanging space.

Hi Mr Slater, The weather across the atlantic was glorious, really hot in Barbados and the other Islands high 80's, as we neared Teneriffe it did start to go down to the high 70's the sea was calm the best crossing the captain had known. Don't worry too much though as there is plenty to do on board throughout the day if it is a bit chilly. You could always hit the bar with a warming drink as we did now and again and again and .... Have a good cruise relax and enjoy.

what was the transatlantic crossing like was it a smooth crossing and did it get a bit boring
ANSWER
Answer by Chris and Dave, Gloucester (23 Sep 09 08:28) to a QUESTION by fox (20 Sep 09 09:58)
Hi Mr Fox, The transatlantic crossing was brilliant hardly ever any movement only now and again you'd think to yourself; Oh have I had one too many or was it the ship swaying, mind you the captain did comment that this was the smoothest crossing he had done before. Boring, far from it, there is something going on at all times, your Horizen magazine is delivered to your cabin each evening telling you all about the next days entertainment, you just have to go looking for things to suit you or relax, we had no problems getting a sunbed although some people said they were, again if you are looking for quieter areas where its less crowded you'll be fine but at the activities i.e quizzes around the Laguna pool it is harder to get a bed. You do get some selfish ones who go off for lunch or an afternoon siesta and leave their towels on beds but I just looked at it as they are also on holiday and can't help being inconsiderate. I assume you are doing the transatlantic either over in Oct/Nov or return in March. We enjoyed it so much we are doing it all again on 12th March 2010. Have a fantastic cruise and enjoy.
