To Grill or not to Grill

Cruise Line: Cunard Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Queen Mary 2 Sailed: June, 2009
Destination: Transatlantic Age: 46-55
This was our second Trans Atlantic Cruise with Cunard, our first being 4 years earlier on the QE 2 when we travelled in a Queens Grill category cabin. Sadly since retiring a couple of years ago we could only stretch to a Brittania restaurant category cabin so this time so we had our fingers crossed.

Our findings may interest you especially if you are considering a similar cruise.

The Queen Mary 2 is such a big ship you are allocated a specific check-in time, ours was 12 noon and we arrived on time. We were greeted by a smiling member of staff who sweetly enquired as to our dinning category when we explained that we were Brittania Restaurant her tone changed and we were handed a numbered card and told to wait over there untill called... Grill category guests were allowed to check in straight away. We had to wait an hour before our number was called, I kept wondering why we had been given a 12 oclock slot in the first place.
Once on board there was the usual scrabble for the lifts to the cabins, the best advice I can give is walk along the deck a bit forward or aft depending on your cabins location and try the lifts there, they are far less busy.
Our cabin was clean and and well planned out but the mattresses were somewhat worn. On close inspection we found that they had not been turned from new and had extensive wear in the torso area, housekeeping were only able to assist with boards so we turned the mattresses ourselves to make them a little more comfortable.
Our cabin steward was very good, the trip was to mark our Silver Wedding Anniverary and Cunard had made a real effort by placing flowers, chocolates and a bottle of sparkling white wine in our cabin with a card congratulating us in our celebrations.
That night we dined in the Brittania Restaurant, we had been allocated a table for four, we are not unsociable but my wife has had a head injury and has speech difficulties so not wishing to spend the entire cruise interpreting for her or re living the events leading to her injuries and rehabilitaion we requested a table for two, this was not a problem and Cunard are to be congatulated for this as requests on other cruises have been denied!!

Be warned the Brittania Restaurant is VERY big and gets VERY busy, its also dull and gloomy with poor lighting and there is a strange vibration especially noticable on the upper level which is a real distration.
The food was very good no complaints there, a few cost cutting measures were noticed in the meal selections but the best thing about the whole cruise was the alternative dinning venues most of which do not have a cover charge, I especially enjoyed the Carvery the steaks were outsanding.

As for activities on board we noticed a distinct lack of free ones compared to other cruises, the 'ART AUCTIONS' are clearly an EARNER for cruise companies, the QM 2 had one most days as well as lectures on Opels, Gems, Health & Diet all of which had a commercial aim in mind.

The staff and crew on board were helpfull and polite and the waiters in the Brittania Restaurant didn,t stop to take breath, boy do they earn their money. I have no problem with the $11 dollars a day service charge, they really do deserve it.

Another word of advise, there are plenty of Yellow cabs when you arrive at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal waiting to take you into downtown Manhatten, ours cost $35 plus tip, Cunard were charging $99 dollars each for a coach tour there. If you shared a cab with another couple each way then take the 'Down Town RED BUS tour at $44 each you could save a few bucks.
Happy Cruising JJ Bournemouth

Your review has worried me a little - we will be celebrating our 20th Wedding anniversay on this ship next summer and we are saving up, but can only afford the Brittania. If we are given a 12'oclock time and not allowed to embark I shall certainly make my feelings known - loud and clear! Likewise the matress issue. Ihope the QM gets its act together - otherwise I may as well have gone on a cheaper cruise!

I have tried to be fair and honest and report the absolute truth, I was interested in the comment by cunane, inkpen and can,t help thinking that this person is an employee of the cruise company as 'Damage limitation', their name is similar and the comments are objective and not from personal experience which is what this medium is supposed to address. To be honest before we reached our cabin my wife was so fed up she said she wanted to go home and I wanted to as well so we hope you have a better reception on arrival and have a super Anniversary trip.JJ

I'd like to put the record straight. Having met Paul Cunane on QM2's World Cruise this year I can vouch that he is not an employee of any cruise line. I also found your review intersting, however, as with most reviewers that experience a glitch, that is not always the fault of the cruise line, it does tend to set the tone. With regard to the frustrations surrounding the 'odd' lengthy check-ins that occur, one only has to read the question on this website by Christine of Chiselhurst/Aurora/1st July. Stating she has been allocated a 2.00pm check-in, the first response was to advise her to arrive at midday. I appreciate we all get excited about embarking on our cruises. Is it any wonder that, with her massive capacity, that nigh on two and a half thousand passengers appear before embarkation comes 'under starters orders': and those who were requested to arrive at midday or earlier are swamped in the general stampede. It's still more preferable to queuing and waiting at airports. Regards, Richard

Sir, I'm not an employee of Cunard or any cruise company and I can assure you my comments are from personal experience having 13 voyages credited to my Cunard voyage history (7 on QM2) No one is suggesting for one moment that you and your wife didn't have to wait over an hour until you were called for embarkation - I am aware your wife has personal difficulties and this must have added to the stress. As I pointed out below embarkation/dissembarkation is often a very big hassle - most seasoned travellers are aware of this but it's a pity that somtimes we let it tarnish our vacation. For me the trip has only begun once I'm in the Cabin , my luggage has safely arrived and I've popped the cork on that complimentary sparkling wine. Thank you for the tip I'll remember to check the mattress on the 'Round Britain' trip in October.

I think your worrying unnecessarily - there is a difference between 'check in' and 'embarkation' The check in time is only a suggested time depending on what deck your stateroom is on - this is where all documentation , photo key card and credit card details are taken care of - there is also security to pass through before you arrive into the embarkation lounge. Most people arrive well before the suggested check in time and some people arrive later - excuse the pun but don't expect everything to be plain sailing as embarkation day on most ships can be a hassle. After check in all guests are invited to take a seat in the embarkation lounge - the embarkation is staggered to avoid a scabble. You will find that QM2 has no need to get its act together you will have memorable wedding anniversary - as for the beds they are the best afloat. ;-)

Hi Cunane, Thanks for your reply - I have been on 6 Thomson cruises, 1 Ocean Village, 1 Air Tours and 1 RCI- and ALL the embarkations were speedy and well organised so maybe it's only Cunard that find it difficult to cope. Granted Destiny is only a little ship but RCI's Mariner of the Seas is huge! I'm afraid I've obviously been spoiled by Thomsons! Heigh ho I'll take a book and expect a long wait!

I've been on one Thomson cruise and it nearly put me off for life. A gazebo on the dockside for check-in? Fortunately I had had an earlier, considerably better, cruising experience. We all see things differently though. You are going to experience quality on the QM2. Still, as Paul Cunane says, you are worrying unnecessarily: and you will not have to pay extra for your stateroom safe. I look forward to your review. Happy cruising and happy 20th, Richard

Hi Richard Thanks for your good wishes. Really looking foraward to it and I suppose I want it to be perfect. Guess I'm lucky and have only had good experiences with Thomsons. RCI was fine too but the shows weren't as good (with the exception of the ice show) possibly geared more to the American market which is understandable. I am looking forward to the RADA performances and to the lectures. As for the safe - well the cruise is so much more expensive then it's nice to know that is free! To be honest I just love being aboard a ship and looking at the sea! What have you got against gazebos??
