Butlins at sea

From the advertsing, we thought this would suit us as we like to be quite informal and relaxed on holiday. We found Ocean Village a strange mixture, that didn't live up to expectations at all. When they say it's for people who don't do cruising, they are right because they have put us off going cruising ever again. It was like a crurates egg there was some very good bits and some very bad one's too. The Bistro was great as was the La Luna Restaurant, but why all the extra charges. We paid a lot of money to get upgraded to a balcony, which turned out to be microscopic. Our aim was to sit out there and have a pre-dinner tipple. However, if you wanted a drink in the cabin you had to pay £5.00 on top of the cost of the bottle you already purchased on board. You were searched everytime you went on/off the ship, so you didn't bring any bottles on from the Duty free shops. Funny because we saw the Captain and the officers buying spirits to take back without any hassle at all!!
The on-shore excursion costs were outrageous, and boy are you rushed round at lightning speed. The entertainment isn't anything special, however you are reminded all day to go and see it, it actually puts you off. It reminded us of Hi De Hi. In fact one of the announcers constantly burst out laughing while she was announcing which didn't help. The staff in general are very nice and helpful, but beware some of them are particularly pushy, which when you want to relax is very irritating. Someone remarked to me that it was like being trapped on the QVC shopping channel for 2 weeks. Its different strokes for different folks, so if you want to relax and don't want hassle this isn't for you.
Quality of Food2
We ate in the Waterfront and Platation the most. We would have eaten in La luna and the Bistro more often if was less expensive
Entertainment1
What we saw was poor so we didn't attend all the shows
Shore Excursions2
Staff5
Ice in the Bistro
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities1
Cabins2
We paid for an upgrade to a Balcony, which frankly didn't live up to expectations. However, Royson was brilliant and the cabin was nice and roomy. The ship does however badly need upgrading as it is very old fashioned.

You are absolutely spot on!! No wonder it's sold as informal and for those who don't do cruising!! Sail with a quality line and you'll find an absolute difference - both in terms of standards and passengers. I like the reference to Hi De Hi - you are so right....Everyone herds around from entertainment to entertainment ike sheep. I willl not sail again with OV - if you read my review on OV1 Med yesterday you will see why and like you I have also been criticised for my views. Having sailed 3yrs ago and 2 yrs ago with OV the entertainment shows are exactlyl the same i.e. FEVER and PLANT show - this is just unacceptable and a complete waste of money. Never again

We went on OV2 for TWO weeks in May and had a great time. We paid £1200 each for a balcony on deck 11 which was well worth it. Regarding the food we had no complaints. Regarding taking booze on board the security staff have a right to search everyone but they dont always. All bags go through a scanner and if you have a couple of bottles/ cans no problem. The secret is to buy a couple of drinks in every port. Security it vital with terrorist threats and a London Registered ship in port. So most people reading your review would be happy about being searched. I guess the entertainment is typical of the summer season stuff but dont forget these are not big stars and they do have a few top of the bill acts. Dont forget we traveled to 10 ports had free gym, free food 24/7, sun beds, clean bedding, cabin cleaned every day. balcony, harbour charges, fuel charges, a crew of 600 plus in support to pay and all for £600 a week each. If you take off £300 for flights to Crete the accomodation on OV2 cost £450 a week and thats only £64 a day all in. What fantastic value OV Cruises are. And by the way the bar prices are what you would pay in any average UK Pub. In live generally you get what you pay for..

I've just published my own review - I have very much enjoyed OV and OV2, but yes, the entertainment is Hi-de-Hi-ish and the excursions are expensive and the restrictions on cabin drinking are silly. It's not as relaxing as it should be, but I guess that's because the cruises themselves are inexpensive (I booked mine through this website and it was about half brochure price) - they have to make money from peripherals like drinks and excursions. You'll get a classier experience on other lines, but you'll pay a lot more for it. Cheaper just to bring earplugs!

Another pointless rant, this is a review site, review the good and bad points of the ship, butlins at sea i think not, obviously you have been to butlins in order to compare, OV are brilliant and since my first ever cruise with them i have gone on to cruise countless times, people dont be put off by this person who has had one bad day then doesnt enjoy the full week they are just silly.

When you are emotionally attached to something like you are to OV cruises it's very difficult to remain rational, when what you have strong feelings for is reviewed factually. One of he points about reviews I thought was to inform prospective users as to your opinions on the experience. I think it's great that you like OV cruises. However don't assume that everyone should like it the way you do. Also don't assume that I had one bad day, I didn't, and I went for 2 weeks not 1. Don't assume that I went to Butlins to compare I didn't, don't assume my review excluded the good points, it didn't. My review was factual, I didn't make banal comments like "countless times" What does a reader interpret from that, that you are OV institionalised? As I said in my review it's different strokes for different folks. In my case all I said was that the experience didn't match my expectations, and expanded on why.

My only struggle is how you only rated it as 1 star as your review states that there were some good bits and you only rated 2 parts as 1 star. Cruises are always subjective. As far as we were concerned, OV did what it said on the packaging. No frills cruising. Everything that they promised was there. OK it wasn't all perfect but in reality we found most things more or less spot on. When you booked your balcony, why did you thin that this was going to be a large sitting out space? Believe you me on most ships they are not. On RCI their nearly all balcony rooms were tiny rooms with tiny balconies too which is not what we were expecting but then again we got what we were promised with 2 chairs a table and a sitting out space so how could we complain. or moan OK our expectations had not been met but in effect they hadn't advertised or promised anything else. Your clear disappointment with OV is noted but I still think you are writing so negatively because you couldn't take your own duty free on which you would have known about in advance anyway (what the staff are allowed to do is irrelevent - don't forget they are on that ship for a lot longer than a fortnight and some perks are allowed), because a member of the entertainment staff laughed when making announcements, because the trips were expensive but really it is down to the fact that your own personal expectations were not met but this is not because Ocean Village did not do what they say on the packaging.

Why is Mr Jones that whenever somebody writes a review on Ocean Village you always come back critising them for doing so? Especially when their love for the ship doesn't match yours, or they give opinions contrary to yours. Perhaps you are paid by them to do this. Everyone is entitled to their opinion whether you like it or not.

Thanks for your comments , which I found very constructive in the light of my review. As I said I thought prospective clients should see both sides of the argument, unlike Sutcliffe. Incidentally I wasn't at all upset about the Duty free, it was merely the princilple. I wasn't alone on this I overheard at least 5 couples on board who raised the issue as well. (I wasn't listening its just that when you are packed like sardines on the deck sunbathing) it's difficult not too. Just thought people should know. I have subsequently looked at the advertising copy and nowhere does it mention "no frills cruising" if thats what it had said I would have considered it differently. So unlike Sutcliifes comments I am glad that you have confirmed for me that OV it is no frills cruising.

You seem to be making a big deal about the entertainment, casino etc - most people go on cruises for the itinerary. We thought the food was great on OV and we're fussy eaters. It actually describes the buffet as high quality not luxury - the quality was very good it's just that you were expecting something superb in the choice of dish a la Celebrity cruise ships. We've also been on RCI and P&O and their excursions were about the same as OV but their bar prices were significantly more expensive and we didn't like in particular RCIs tipping system. Why does Peter Gibson expect Ocean Village to be of similar quality to Celebrity which is a 5 star cruise line when it is clearly marketed as a 3 star cruise and not everyone thinks Celebrity is great either when you read the reviews. By the way have you ever been to Butlins to make comparisons? Yes the entertainment is not to everyones taste, it wasn't to mine but we still had a fabulous good value for money holiday and we didn't have to put up with the I'm a gold, diamond club member andhave spent £10000 on this holiday that we do 4 times a year therefore expect everyone to look up to me behaviour either.
