I was looking forward to our cruise on freedom of the seas around the eastern caribbean. Oct 2007. I knew the minute I stepped on board I was on the wrong ship for me. I had always immagined a cruise to be like a floating holiday camp. However many of our friends were doing it so I was swayed by their opinion. Sadly I was right. My family and I tend to stay at high end hotels (Leading hotels of the world) or Mandarin Oriental or Shangrila or Four Seasons etc I had hoped our ship would be of similar quality. It was brash and very tacky! Lets do the plus points first. The food was excellent throughout. As was the service. I couldnt fault the staff in anyway and the Gym was fantastic. The steakhouse was superb and the food in the main restaurant very good. The windjammer (Buffet) was beautifully presented until the Americans got their hands on it! Then it became like a bun fight at the OK corral. It was wrecked in minutes and the amount of food wasted enormous. The cabin Deck 11 balcony. Spacious cabin, shower room tiny. The decor for the most part except the main restaurant was tasteless and gaudy although expensive but then money never did by taste! The swimming pools were packed and although I have never been reminded me of a Benidorm resort hotel. There were two formal evenings on our 7 night cruise, these were the highlight if only every evening could have been elegent and sylish most evenings people dressed as if they were going to MacDonalds. We nicknamed the ship the SS Travelodge. I will never again sail with Royal Caribbean it was the height of bad taste. However the value for money was superb and I am still in love with the idea of cruising I just hope that the next time I am on the right ship!

We have cruised 4 times with Royal Caribbean including on the Freedom. All I can say is that you can't please everybody! We enjoyed all of the ships including Freedom. I agree some people do dress quite casually but cruising has become more casual nowadays. I certainly would not have likened people's dress to having a night at MacDonalds (unless Morpeth has a very upmarket MacDonalds!) The great things aout a cruise is that you can get dressed up if you want to and not feel out of place as the majority of others do likewise.

What a raving snob, you would be better staying in the Hotels you mention. Obviously not used to money. It well shows.

from the comments you have made re;taste and class I would suggest CRYSTAL AND SILVERSEA These are high end and uber stylish.Obviously you get what you pay for ,on a cheaper scale but still very good are celebeiry cruises BUT ONLY MILLENIUM AND SOLTICE CLASS ships NOT the older ships.Summit Millenium and Constellation and the new soltice with its ''lawn club'' are ARE MORE AFFORDABLE CHOICE Give them ago you wont be dissapointed! happy cruising

You simply picked the wrong cruise line! Then are American mass-market. By the way, RCI's decor and onboard experince is almost sedate compared to Carnival!

You should have done your homework upfront and gone with Crystal, The yachts of Seabourne, Silversea, or any number of seagoing equivalents of Mandarin Oriental. That being said, the Americans may tuck into the food faster than anyone else, but at least they don't get soused to the pits, into fights, and subsequently chucked off the ship with the monotonous regularity that the Brits do.
