Mystery cruise

Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Times cruised before: 3-5
Cruise Ship: Sea Princess Sailed: May, 2009
Destination: Panama Canal Age: 56-65
Sailed on Sea Princess to Panama Canal from the 9/5/09 to the 24/5/09 but the cruise had began one week before my husband and I boarded it and run into engine problems during that first week .
Our first week (from the 9th of May and the second week of the cruise) was the equivalent of a very bad Mystery Cruise due to the amount of changes made to our destinations. Princess Cruises did not notify the passengers coming on board on the 9th of May that as the ship was running with three engines instead of four we might not make some of the destinations we booked in our original itinerary. We only found out when we were already on board with a letter from the Captain of the ship left in our cabin staiting that Cartagena was 'out' because of engine troubles. The captain organized a meeting in the restaurant on the 10th of May attended by 400/500 complaining passengers (We heard him saying he only expected 30/40. Out of touch with passenger's feelings or what?) The meeting did not go well and the captain made matters worse when he stated he did not believe that none of the passengers had received written notification from Princess Cruises that because of the swine flu only two new ports Guatemala and Nicaragua would replace the three initial Mexican ports. This rude comment did not go down well with the passengers. He also stated that due to the engine problems Cartagena was definetely 'out' and we might not be able to go to any other destination as the engine problem might go on for about a month. The only place he assured us we would be going was Aruba and Panama, which we had to go through on time in order to reach San Francisco for the next cruise to Alaska.
Then another letter from the captain received on the 12/05/09 notified us that Guatemala was 'out' and we would be spending six days on board before reaching San Francisco. He 'offered' us $1000 'consolation price' and 25% discount of a future cruise based on the amount paid for our present cruise. We do not particularly want to take this offer specially since another letter from the captain landed on our cabin on the 15/05/09 and this time Nicaragua was 'out' and two of the three original ports in Mexico, Acapulco and Cabo San Lucas were re-instated, but Cabo was cut short by four hours. All of this took place during our first week on board. We took the cruise for the destination and to relax and unwind. Relaxing cruise? What do you think? Princess Cruises logo is "escape completely". I would add to this: "to chaos and disorganization". Talk about playing 'mind games with the passengers!. I forgot to add that unhappy passengers organized another meeting by word of mouth, without the captain, in the ships Atrium, attended again by 400 to 500 during which names and addresses were exchanged for a possible future group law suit against Princess Cruises. I wonder if they would have re-instated Mexico without that second meeting?. All of the above is documented because I kept copies of all the letters and the daily ship's Princess Patter and some passengers took pictures of the second meeting.
The ship is rather old and I am of the opinion that Princess Cruises have broken the contract we entered when we purchase the cruise by allowing us to board it knowing before hand that the engine problem would not allow us to go to the ports quoted on our initial itinerary. (Obviously swine flu aside).
Moreover, there was trouble with lifting and lowering tenders and one specific tender got out of control when returning from one of the ports and was going round in circles causing distress to passengers on board of it and those watching their predicament. Sweage smell was prominent some days on board as well as a black granule like residue in some toilets. Also the headboard of our bed fell on top of our heads whilst sleeping. Not a pleasant awakening and it might have caused us an injury. There were other problems on board ship but I am not able to detail them because we did not experience them.
We wanted and expected and tried to make the best of our holiday but the constant changes were not conducive to relaxation.
Likely, we did not receive any more 'letters' from the captain during the second week and from then on we were able to enjoy the destinations we managed to get to. The food was quite good most of the time especially the lobster, crab, steak and cold soups. Vegetables, salads and fruit were also very good and so were the deserts and cakes. The same cannot be said about the white fish as it tended to be overcooked and tasteless.
I have read comments from people stating that complainers should 'shut up'. To this I will say that we are only able to take certain amount of holidays per year and we are entitled to expect a return for our money. My husband and I have travelled all over the world and are well aware that sometimes things go a bit wrong and when they do we take it on our stride, but this cruise was unacceptable. It is the responsibility of the Cruise company to make sure the ships have been well maintained and are fit for the purpose of the holiday they sold to their passagers. Unfortunatelly the Cruise companies tend to cover their backs with their Terms and Conditions too frequently and only if we take the trouble to complaint they might change their procedures.

An excellent report by Gili of what actually occured (9/5/09 - 24/5/09) in the weeks preceding our Alaska cruise 24/5/09 -3/6/09 on Sea Princess. This Ship was late arriving in San Francisco 24/5 delaying embarkation by 2 hours and as on the previous trip we were also greeted with a letter from the Captain stating that due to engine problem the itinerary would be curtailed. The above review proves that the ship had engine problems for several weeks and like them we had not received any communication from Princess Cruises (disgraceful). Unlike them we were not even invited to a meeting with the Captain to express our grievances (perhaps he had learned his lesson). Previous reveiws and comments earlier on this site explain dissatisfaction regarding this cruise. I wrote to 'Passenger Relations, Princess Cruises, Southampton' on the 8th June, and so-far have not received the courtesy of a reply, I would therefore be interested to hear whether any other aggrieved passenger from this cruise has been more successful. I would also be interested in any reviews or comments of the Alaska trip starting the 3rd of June. People who comment on moaners (just because they had a good time or enjoyed some other cruise) should first be aware that besides having our time in the allocated ports cut short and most launderettes not operational, some passengers had no hot water in their cabins, no change of bed linen, sewage smell in the corridors and luggage dropped into the sea on disembarkation. Accepting poor service encourages low standards.

I agree with you, my husband and I were on the May 24th, 2009 10 day Sea Princess Alaskan Cruise and were thoroughly disgusted, we feel ripped off. I have tried with Princess and Zoe's Cruises to get some kind of compensation, but they keep saying it was a unforseen event that caused the itenerary to be dramatically changed, which is a lie, they knew days, probably even weeks before that there were problems and they notified no one. So I have talked to a Lawyer and it looks like I am going to take both of them to small claims court, I am not giving up. That was a lot of money for a cruise that we did not get as far as we are concerned.

We were on the Barbados to Fort Lauderdale 7 day May 2 to 9, 2009 and we did have our share of issues. I don’t know how Princess makes any money. We had booked a BF balcony guarantee for $750 USD base price each. A few days before the cruise Princess called and said they had over booked the balconies and would we take an outside for $500 each. I managed to get a large outside and felt it was a fair trade. While on board we were credited another $381 each for the book value difference between the two cabins. We missed Princes Cays so we received another $50 each. At the end of it all Princess paid us each $82USD to take their cruise. We did have propulsion problems, missed Princes Cays, late getting to St Maarten because of life boat issues in Antigua, but at the end of the day it’s hard to complain about a cruise when we were paid to go. We finished the cruise with an $1,100 credit and Princess insisted we take cash before leaving the ship.

So sorry to hear of your problems on your cruise, but at least you had a cruise. We were booked to go on Celebrity Milennium in March 09 out of Auckland New Zealand. We flew out early to Hong Kong on 7th March for a few days before heading on to Auckland. On the 9th we had a message from our travel agent informing us that Celebrity has cancelled the Cruise, due to pod propulsion problems and that she was to go into dry dock in Sydney. We immediately emailed Celebrity to find out why from them. We then had to either return to britain and cancel the rest of our once-in-a-lifetime holiday as my husband has health problems or try and find something else to do for 14days. We spent the rest of our days in H/K trying to sort something out, so did not get to see many of the sights, only Hong Kong Island 1/2 day trip. Through these problems my husbands health deteriorated and he spent time in hospital to our expense. Anyway our travel agent managed to find us a coach trip from north to south island N/Z and we headed off to Auckland as my husband said we had come all this way so to carry on. We had to pay an extra £1500 pounds for this trip on top of what we had originally paid, but we had a super trip, but being packed for a cruise we only had summer tshirts etc and N/Z was going into Autumn. We were not the only people that were stuck in H/K or Singapore that were on this cruise as we found out during our 3 day stay in Auckand. We met many people who had travelled out earlier from Canada and the States and Europe who were in the same situation as we were and had booked the same tour as we had. Celebrity told our travel agents that we would be given our money back for the 'cruise only' part of our holiday and that we would be given 'upto' $300 for extra flights journeys etc. We exchanged emails with our new found friends on our holiday and have up until now heard from some 700 people who had the same problems. We all wrote en-mass to Celebrity with our complaints, having sorted out the correct correspondence letter. Celebrity replied to say that they we sorry for the inconveience to us all and that the amount we had was all we were going to get, as that was their standard procedure within their T & Conditions. I can only hope that you get recompence from Princess, but do not get your hopes up.
