Dear Sian,

First I would like to comment on the excellent personel service that you have given me and would like to let everyone know how efficient and proffessional and helpful you have been with all my bookings. I will continue to book my future cruises with you for sure.

The trip that you have asked me to review was my second and third transatlantic crossings back to back on QM2, my first transatlantic crossing was the final tandem crossing of QE2 and QM2 in October 08.

I was travelling alone this time so I was bound to pay a single supplement which I always find a little annoying a I believe single passengers spend pro rata so much more money, we tend to socialise more and go to more fee paying events to pass the time. EG. Nearly all the participants of the wine tastings and whisky tastings were attended by single passengers.
The very least up grade the cabin where ever possible.

Bars, Cocktails and Wine.

I find the service in the Golden Lion Pub and the Chart Room excellent and have very warm memories of my relationship with all bar staff which is so important when travelling solo. We laughed alot together, infact they made my trip a wonderful experience. Also the drinks and cocktails are made to a high standard and are streets ahead of the competition.

I have Fred Olsen, Star Cruises, Royal Carribean and Celebrity X loyalty cards in my wallet so I feel I am qualified to compare.

I also would like to mention my sommelier who was very attentive and went the extra mile. However I do find the wine very expensive across the whole list.

I also really object to the 15% service charge on the cost of wine , especially as I go for good quality wines and champagnes which are already well over priced, I feel a fixed service charge per bottle would be fairer with the cost of the bottle an irrellvant factor. Maybe more people would buy wine if it was more fairly priced. I notice very few bottles were purchased by the other nine travellers at my table over the twelve days of our cruise?

I would like to add that I have no objection to the 15% service charge at the bars as I find the drinks the most fairly priced at sea, as I mentioned earlier.

Restaurants

Firstly I would like to compliment the daily effort of all the staff in the Britannia restaurant and the variety of food on offer daily, the food was of a high standard over the whole duration of the trip. I am a man who has spent twenty eight years marketing Hotels and Restaurants all over the world and have to admire the consistency of service considering how many meals are produced daily. This is truely the key and not easy to achieve. WELLDONE

This takes me to Todd English which was also consistant, consistantly bad. The food is wanting, the service rushed, the tables to small and cramped, so an intimate comfortable romantic meal is almost impossible, unless of course intimate means almost sharing the lap and table of the guests next to you. Please note I dine out on average 300 times a year in all manner of restaurants. I rate this restaurant as very poor. I have dined three times in the evening on three seperate crossings and my findings are consistantly getting worse. The attitude of the staff is also false and distinctly different to the rest of the ship. Lastly $30 suppliment per head for dinner, I am lost for words. Please note my extras bill for 12 days was over 7K so the cost was not the issue, but I feel angry every time I pay $30 for anything these days as it reminds me of TODD ENGLISH who by the way is AMERICAN.

Kings Court was a great contrast to Britannia Restaurant and I loved the themes at dinner and quality of food and the service was excellent. However I found lunch a little like school dinners and the service similar to motorway cafes, also I found the sweet selection really wanting and poor and almost the same every lunch I attended.

PLEASE NOTE BREAKFAST IS EXELLENT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SHIP, EACH AND EVERY RESTAURANT. WATCH THE WASTELINE GROW?

I suggest gentleman put a pair of the next size up of trousers in your suitcase, or buy slacks with an elasticated waistband, you will need them.

The entertainment throughout the ship and the guest speakers, lectures are second to none and of the highest quality. If one starts to critisize or comment on any of the shows or acts you see, as you will become blaize after a while as the novelty wears off, JUST REMIND YOURSELF TICKETS IN THE LONDON THEATRE ARE AROUND 200 DOLLARS A PAIR ????

SEE YOU SOON AT SEA

PS. My cabin was very comfortable and my cabin attendant a STAR.

Warm regards Paul Shaw (48 years young)

My own personal experience of the Kings Court was that i hated it. First and foremost it is far too large. I did not eat one single meal with my family during the whole crossing. By the time we had all gone to various sections to choose what style of food we wanted we could never find each other again. I wandered around for ages looking for them and eventually gave up (with a tray of food which was now cold). To add further misery you then have to queue to get your own drinks. In the Lido on the QE2 you were served drinks at your table. This is not a case of laziness but simply common sense. You have a tray of food already going cold and then you have to queue up yet again. It's not good. One day i sat at a table in Kings Court and the next table was piled high with dirty dishes. By the end of my meal they were still there. This is unacceptable and would never happen on the QE2. The second you put down your knife and fork your plate was taken away. Brilliant service by staff who appeared to care more than the staff on QM2. Perhaps they're just overworked, i got the impression of too many passengers and not enough staff. One more thing about Kings Court. They always had plenty of strawberries available at breakfast but never any at lunchtime. Is it me? To sum up, The Kings Court was not a patch on The QE2's Lido.

Dear Mr.Taylor, I could not agree more with you with regards to the King's Court at lunchtime as I mentioned in my review I compared this to school dinners. Did you ever go there for dinner in the evening? The set up is completely different and is turned in to 4 distinctly different restaurants, and usually you have to book for a table. The service is personal and the ambience totally different. I also agree with you with regards to the more professional service of QE2 in my experience the old style of cruising still applies. I think there are certain areas of QM2 that are not much difference in service to that of a cross channel ferry?? Regards Shaw

An excellent and considered review. I already take clothes that will fit at the beginning of a cruise, and another set that will fit at the end! Even going to the gym daily it is impossible not to add a few lbs. Question: can you confirm that the Todd English restaurant has a $30 supplement? I wasn't sure from your review, if so, what a disappointment for you. Also, I have always wondered whether the seas on a transatlantic crossing are rough because there are so many days at sea, it has put me off doing one so far. Thanks. AJ

A wonderful and constructive review from a seasoned traveller and level headed gentleman I might add. Not too sure about the 7k but hey this is good. We find Cunard terrific value but the comments on drinks and Todd English are accurate and Cunard please take note and lets see some action. I buy wine at dinnner but would like to see reduced prices. We do find most of the staff do go the extra mile and this is also pleasing. Just like Macy's UK Visitors discount offered to all UK Citizens visiting the wonderful and great USA. I think the discount is 10% and do not be afraid to ask in store at Customer Services this applies to all Macy's Stores in the USA not just New York! So make further savings and spend at the Bar on the Cunrd Liners.

Don't want to be rude and perhaps it was a misprint but how can you spend 7K on extras on a 12 day trip? I have been on QE2 several times in past and always thought final bill reasonable and had everything I wanted. I am intrigued!
