Australians are welcome to OV2

My sister and I are new to cruising, only having cruised once before in Feb 2009 around the Caribbean with Thompson Destiny. My mother (aged 82) had just lost her husband and hadn't been on holiday for years so we decided on a cruise. We chose the Med so that the flying time was relatively short. We chose OV so that a complete new wardrobe wasn't needed by my mother. This was a very bad decision. The Plantation Restaurant was very noisy and lots of jostling against others going in the opposite direction. Sometimes unavoidable as always closing off one side or restaurant and/or drinks station. Apart from the general din there was also music piped through the whole time. Not soothing background music, but, sometimes quite loud modern noisy music (had to choose your spot to sit which was difficult as others must have had same idea). Food not particular good, or hot, and too many curry or chinese evenings. Whilst the Waterfront was a more civilised atmosphere and looked more like a restaurant than school canteen again the choice of food wasn't great. The entertainment was poor and very, very loud in the Marguee. The tribute shows might have been worth watching, but we had to leave after couple of songs (Annie Lennox) and one (Robby Williams) as too loud. They have the amplification up far too much. My mother is deaf and had to take out both her hearing aids and put her finger in her better ear. We weren't alone in walking out and neither were we at the front, but the rear. I also heard others complaining that there weren't enough seats. Sometimes we sat around the Balcony Bar on level 7 and some of the singers were awful.
Trying to get a sunbed in the sun on days at sea or when most people had returned from shore was almost impossible. There were 'Sunbed Police' who tagged your chair/bed if it was left too long, but rarely came back after the 30 mins to remove towels etc., and this was hit and miss as a couple next to us left their beds for 1 hour 10 mins and weren't tagged.
Children under 9 were not supposed to go in the hot tubs and 9-16 year old were to be accompanied by an adult, yet there was no 'policing' of this rule and no notice by them. The notice was on something in your cabin.
Company policy in the brochure states than for a fee of £5 (outlandish) you can take a duty free bottle to your cabin. However, a new Captain joined the ship the same day as us and this right was taken away. The wine was £1.45 a bottle dearer than our previous cruise for same type/name.
If this had been our first cruise we would have been put off cruising, but thankfully had our memories of the 'Destiny' which, although more of a tired ship, gave us a great holiday.

My wife and I have also been on OV1 three times OV2 ( may this year for 2 weeks) and Thomson Destiny which was in "our view" not a patch on OV Cruises. If you prefer Destiny then that fine by everyone . It sounds like you like to have formal dining at an allocated table and this is what we didnt like about Destiny. Stuck with the same boaring f..rts every night. The average cost of a cruise on OV is about £700 a week per person and if you take off £300 for a Crete Flight you are paying £400 for 7 nights or about £60 a night. Now tell me anywhere else where you can dine 24/7 in a Hotel with entertainent all day , free sun beds. free Gym, Free entertainment. Karaoke, travelling to the 6 ports of call and everything else you get Free on the crusie all for just £60. You cant watch Newcastle United for that ???....... ohhh maybe you can now.

Totally disagree with this review, the first cruise i went on was the Dawn Princess , years ago, and although not up to the same standard as princess, i really enjoyed the Ocean Village 1 and 2 , 3 years in a row and will be going this sept again, and i cant wait, the only thing i can agree with is the connexions bar being full, but that goes to show that people find it enjoyable. I for one are sorry that Ocean village are leaving the med. I thought this review was a bit SNOBBISH....

I, along with my partner, totally disagree with the review of Christie, and agree with the comment by Gogger. We too seem to have been on the same cruise. I think we were probably sitting near to the 'Christie' one night. We remember because she did nothing but moan. I cannot understand why these type of people don't sail with the more expensive ships. Probably because they want first class treatment but don't want to pay extra for it. We were new to cruising and booked for two weeks. I read numerous reviews beforehand, 99% of which I must say were excellent. Ocean Village Two is a fantastic ship with lovely decor. I know I cannot compare it to other ships but, looking at the various websites they look rather old and tired. Our cabin was spotless and comfortable; only critism, we were on deck 5, middle ship, which was rather noisy, maybe from the engine. As everything else was marvellous, including our cabin assistant, Alvin, who always had a cheery smile whenever we saw him, it did not bother us too much. All the staff were friendly and happy. The food was great, plenty to eat, and always seats to be found in the Plantation restaurant, where we mostly ate, especially if you chose to eat after 8pm. The food we had was hot with plenty of choice. Curry or Chinese evenings were always accompanied by other varied hot and cold choices. They only closed part of the restaurant off after about 8.45pm. You cannot blame them; why should they have the whole of the restaurant open when there were not many people dining after this time? As for the entertainment, it was brilliant. The tributes were great with a bit of comedy thrown in. The magician/comedian was hilarious and the talk of the ship the following day. As for the noise, I am not old, 49 years of age, but cannot stand very loud noise as I suffer afterwards. We always sat in the balcony and the volume, I think, was just right. And I didn't suffer one bit!! The sunbed situation is the same wherever you go, but usually if you go to top deck before about 10am you can usually find one, and the ship was completely full both weeks. I had no objection to the 'own drinks' rule. Anyway, the ships drinks prices were quite reasonable. So don't be put off by this one negative review. We would definitely sail again with Ocean Village Two, but unfortunately as the ship is going to Australia, we may not get the chance. Christie, stick to Destiny in future. At least then happy holidaymakers won't have to listen to your moaning!

This is not meant to be a personal criticism site, you are entitled to disagree with another's comments but you are absolutely out of order to say the things you have said. At no time has Christie been rude to you yet you show a complete lack of regard for her with your nasty comments. Obviously another institutionalised OV passenger........

I know this is not a personal criticism site, but what are you doing? Criticising me. Read the other reviews, why pick on me? I was giving my opinion and a detailed review of my holiday, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I can only assume, (yet again), that you have travelled with OV and didn't like it. Perhaps we could hear your views, after all this is a review website and not a personal criticism site as you rightly say.

Whilst you have a right to disagree with me as I too have a right to comment, you should perhaps ask questions before assuming certain things. Firstly, I would be surprised if you sat near us as we didn't always eat in the evening and when we did it was early as we wouldn't have had lunch that day - usually only eating twice a day. The closing off of the restaurant I referred to was mainly at breakfast and when it first opened in the evening. I don't know how much you paid (I had seen the 2 week cruise advertised from £799 (good value at this price), but we paid £1,600 each for 3 people in a cabin and at that price I would expect hot food. I will agree that our cabin was spotless and our cabin girl was extremely nice. The ship was neater than the destiny, but I took the whole experience overall. I spoke to many people who thought it was awful and only wish they knew of, or commented on, this website. One woman, who has sailed on OV1 5 or 9 times (can't remember which) and OV2 once (so knew what she was talking about) was so disgusted that when she got home was removing her name from the relocation waitlist. Another family were so disgusted with the Plantation decided, having tried it, to spend their second week having dinner in La Luna every evening. We dined in there one lunch time and the food was lovely and hot, but why should one have to pay again?

I did say 'I think we were probably' sitting next to you one evening. As for assuming, you are assuming it was in the restaurant. It was not - it was in the bar. I don't think there is any need to discuss prices, it all depends on cabin, level, etc, but we paid much nearer your cost than the advertised one. As for the shutting off of the restaurant, I will repeat my remark of why should a very large restaurant, with more than one food station, be fully open when there is only a scattering of people, spread out over the entire room? Some people moan for the sake of it, and obviously their feelings are not strong enough for them to comment. You always get negative comments wherever you holiday but, overall, our first cruise was wonderful and memorable, and we would love to do it all over again. So, anyone about to embark on a cruise with OV, don't let the few negative comments put you off.

It sounds like we were on the same cruise and have to say "Annie Lennox" was probably the best tribute act I have ever seen and the food was some of the best I have had on holiday - loads of choice even if you don't like that 'foreign muck'. I'd question whether it's worth going on holiday if I were you, find something to moan about at home and do us all a favour.

I agree that 'Annie Lennox' was very good - I didn't say otherwise - only that we thought the volume/amplification in the Marquee was too loud, otherwise we would have stayed for the whole show. I did not refer to the Chinese and Indian food as 'foreign muck' only that it was on the menu too often.
