Really, a "country house hotel" 1200 miles up the Amazon? Unlikely but true. The Swan Helen Amazon Adventure started in Manaus, the state capital which marks the end of the deep water channel for major ocean-going vessels. Minerva II was able to take us further up the black Rio Negro before taking us down through the joining of the yellow Rio Solimoes to the Atlantic. On the way there were well planned and interesting trips to the rain forest, interior villages and local sights, including some trips made in small river boats. Specially good was the food, talks and entertainment. Though a smaller cruise liner there was no crowding and lots of relaxing areas during the day and good choice of dining. It was a great advantage to have trips and tips included in the overall price so avoiding the usual end of cruise worry about rewards for special service - it was all special and the only worry was which Swan Helenic cruise to choose next.

Totally irrelevant - Swan Hellenic is now just a brand name of 'All Leisure' as is 'Voyages of Discovery', if you wish to be constantly patronise, lied to and sold a trip that cannot be performed by Minerva, then this is the company for you.

Opinion: Disagree Comment by Stringer, Thirsk (18 Jun 09 17:04) about this REVIEW
I think this review is highly questionable. Minerva II is no longer in service with Swan Hellenic. None of this review is pertinent to today's Swan Hellenic. I can speak from personal experience regarding Minerva II and the current Minerva. See my review entitled 'Ancient Wonders cruise aboard Minerva'.

The vessel is now transferred to Princess and Swan Hellenic operates with the old Minerva and is in effect a new company. Nearly three years is a long time to wait to submit a review
