Unbelievable Red Sea Magic

We experienced our first cruise in April this year and booked the Red Sea Magic cruise on Thomson Spirit. Our only reason for booking this particular cruise was because we had friends who were already booked on it. We certainly weren't disappointed. In fact I can't wait to go on another!. I only had two complaints about the whole trip. The first was our arrival and departure at Sharm Airport - a complete shambles - but not the fault of Thomson. The second was the lack of cushions for the sun beds. There were loads on the first day but after that it didn't matter how early we got up there just weren't any. I can't imagine why!!!
We had an interior cabin and I was a bit worried about feeling claustrophobic but it was fine. It had plenty of storage (even had room under the bed to store a couple of sunbed cushions if we could have found some) and was plenty big enough for the amount of time we spent in it (which wasn't much).
We ate in the main restaurant every night and although it was open dining we always sat at the same table and had the same very attentive and entertaining waiters. The food was excellent and there was always a good choice. We ate in the self service restaurant the rest of the time and again the food was very good. We never had to queue and the tables were always cleared quickly so there was plenty of room. The waiter service in all the bars was very efficient and even when we were in a busy area of the ship we didn't have to wait long for drinks.
We are not great fans of musicals but I can honestly say that the entertainment on board was extremely good. The team had obviously worked hard to produce a varied and professional program.
We visited Petra - a must see for anyone in the area and well worth the two hour coach trip. The Cairo Museum was very crowded and not so enjoyable. If you really want to see the sights of Egypt then perhaps this cruise is not the best way to experience them. We gave the Luxor trip a miss because of the distances involved. Not that we missed out....there was lots to do on the ship and the weather was fantastic, great for sunbathing and there were plenty of sunbeds. (I don't think there was room under the beds to store them anyway!) Didn't experience any seasickness but the Red Sea was as calm as a lake for the whole week. I think this was probably a really good choice for a first time cruise for that reason and although we have nothing to compare it with I would thoroughly recommend Thomson. It was a wonderful experience for a very good price. Two weeks self catering in Lanzarote or wherever is a thing of the past. I want to be pampered and looked after and taken to a new destination every day.

If you don't do the trips there really is not much else to get off the ship for. They tend not to be in tourist areas and the distances to things of interest would make it difficult to explore on your own. The ports (apart from Sharm) are all very commercial and not equipped for tourists. There was a frequent and free shuttle bus provided at Aqaba which took us into the town (5 mins). We wandered about for an hour or so and although we didn't feel unsafe we didn't feel particularly welcome either. I don't think they are used to tourists. The port authorities don't seem to like tourists wandering about in the port area either. We walked into Sharm on the last day (about 10-15 mins gentle stroll) and looked around the shops. That was OK but be prepared to be hassled by the traders. Also if you go for a drink check prices before you order as we didn't and were charged £8 for 4 cans of coke! These were the only occasions when we left the boat on our own so I can't comment further on the safety issue. We certainly weren't warned against exploring on our own but as I said earlier it would have been very difficult to organise things for ourselves. Besides there was lots to do on the ship!

I think you are very brave going cruising with such young children. The trip to Petra was a very long and pretty exhausting day but well worth the effort. It was a 7.30am start, well over 2 hours on the coach with just a short stop for photos and a long walk down the gorge into Petra. There isn't time for any exploring, it is purely a viewing experience and then a long hike back out again (about one hour each way). If you decide to take advantage of the transport available (horse and carriage) I think it was about 30 euros each way but don't pay in advance as I heard that some people either had to pay more half way up the hill or get out and walk the rest of the way. Oh and don't listen to anyone who tells you that the ride is included in your trip. It isn't! Lunch was in a hotel and then we wandered around the market stalls for a while and were entertained by some musicians before the trip back. We were back on board at about 6.30pm so it is a long day. I think you will need lots for your children to do as it is not a child friendly trip and be prepared for a lot of walking in the heat and exposure to the sun. Good luck, and I am sure that you will enjoy it.
