Panama & Latin America

We travelled on P & O Oceana C Deck 9 balcony cabin 501(well worth the extra) from Barbados to Acupulco, 'Panama & Latin America Cruise' in February 2009. We liked the fact that we could buy a bottle of duty free wine when we first boarded (and subsequently when we went ashore) and could have a drink in our cabin at our own leisure. We've cruised with P & O before and have had set dining, but decided to go for the Freedom Dining as the literature made it sound as if it was just what we wanted. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The first night of the cruise was ok, but the following nights we found we were given a pager, as the waiting times were up to an hour to be seated! On only a couple of nights did we wait approx. 10 minutes and only once did we go straight in. P & O really need to sort this problem out as a lot of people including ourselves were not happy about it. Have P & O dropped their standards or what. We went for lunch and found that we were eating off melamine plates in the Lido Restaurant! Yet when the Barbeque was served around the Pool area we had china plates!! A big disappointment was that when the ship set sail from Barbados there was no sailaway party!! Although P & O asks that passengers do not reserve sun loungers with books and towels etc and to vacate them when not in use we found that this was not the case. Not once did we see a crew member do anything about this resentful problem, as on a number of occasions while trying to look for a lounger, we found that people had indeed left books & towels on them for a length of time (some all afternoon!!!) Entertainment - due to the problem with the Freedom Dining we were too late to see some of the shows. The 'Headliner Theatre Company' Swinging 60s show was good, but 'The Hilarious Comic' Johnny Mac was diabolical. Whoever hired him needs a serious talking to, perhaps Comedy Vocalist - Maurice Grumbleweed could give him a few tips!! Jade Adams and Simon Leigh - vocalists - were good. We didn't find Michael Starke at all interesting, hearing about all the different shows he'd been in!! Please, what kind of entertainment is that. The Entertainment team 'Duo Jango" were absolutely brilliant. Having missed a few of the shows we would listen to them for the evening - an asset to the ship. The highlight of the cruise was for us the Panama Canal. What an experience. We were on deck at 6am and didn't return to our cabin until 5pm overwhelmed by the whole experience - AWESOME.
