I recently travelled to the Eastern Med on the MSC Poesia, this is one of the newer ships in the Fleet of 11, with others on the way. The ship's tonnage is 89,600 carrying 2550 passengers. The cruise was for 8 days flying from gatwick to Venice and then sailing to Bari in Italy, Katakolon, Izmir and Istanbul in Turkey and then Croatia, Dubrovnik and back to Venice. The Ship was pristine, Glitzy but tastefully decorated. All the public rooms were spacious and welcoming however the cabins seemed to be smaller than other cruise lines, with not much space for moving around. This cabin had upper berths for children which felt quite cramped and there was no where else to sit apart from the beds during the day. The meals were excellent and so was the service the olny draw back was if you wanted tea or coffee this had to be pre arranged with the waiter on the first night, it wasn't offered automatically as you might expect. The idea of selling water and wine packages made you feel pressured. Beverages were not readily available only at breakfast and lunch, other times it has to be purchased as did soft drinks and water ( non bottled water was not supplied at any time). All drinks were extremely expensive 6euros for a beer 7-8 euros for a cocktail. I took a travel kettle with me so that I could make a hot drink during the day, you just can't beat a British tea bag.
Tours were expensive as expected and tranfers and shuttles were not complimentary and were charge to accounts. The shows and entertainment were very good with something for everyone, during the day there were plenty of activities, however there was not much for teenagers to do and unless you were fluent in Italian or German communication could pose a problem.
On the whole the cruise was ok, I enjoyed it but I don't think I would travel with an Italian cruise line again the experience was enough.
