COSTA FORTUNE !!!!!

Along with five friends, my husband and I sailed on the Costa Classica cruise to Hong Kong/Taiwan/Japan/South Korea/Shanghai in April 2009. The cruise was chosen for the fabulous itinerary and it didn't disappoint. Everywhere we went was extremely interesting and different in it's own unique way and the local people were friendly and pleasant, particularly in Japan, where they went out of their way to help in any way possible. Pity I can't say the same for the crew and staff of Costa. They were, in the main, rude, arrogant and unhelpful. Their sole purpose seemed to be to extort as much cash as they could and they could not have cared less about the comfort or views of the passengers. The COMPULSORY gratuity of €150 up front was a bone of contention with all passengers we spoke to. Nobody was happy about this, particularly as there was a general feeling that tips and gratuities should be discretionary. We certainly would not have tipped our cabin steward. Drinks and excursions were exorbitant, cabins were shabby and, in our case, dirty. Doors were hanging off and the bathroom door did not close, never mind lock. I had to ask for the cabin to be cleaned the day after our arrival. Our cabin steward was never anywhere to be found and did the minimum to keep our cabin clean. To be fair, our friends all sang the praises of their stewards who were helpful and efficient, which only served to make ours seem a lazy skivver. The self service buffet left a lot to be desired and resembled a poor roadside cafe. Staff there were intimidated by their Italian superiors who frequently shouted and abused them in front of passengers. Food was usually lukewarm and pretty predictable. Breakfast never varied from day one. Dinner was eaten in the Dining Room where service was excellent and food very nice.
We did our own thing for excursions after learning from others that they were not particularly good value. The so called "English speaking rep" was arrogant and condescending and was not remotely interested in assisting unless we had purchased Costa excursions. His female counterpart didn't seem to know what she was supposed to be doing.
The Guest Services staff were also totally disinterested in helping anyone who wasn't Italian despite the guests coming from as far afield as USA, South America, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Hong Kong and UK amongst others.
Entertainment was fairly good in a lovely theatre but the crew's sexually explicit attempts to be funny were completely inappropriate for an audience which contained a number of children. All in all, we made the best of it, despite the crew's unhelpful and, at times, unfriendly attitudes. We certainly WILL NEVER, EVER sail with Costa again. Their priority is making money and not making their passengers comfortable or welcome.

Hi - I have asked this Q on a few reviews so apologies if i seem to be repeating myself. Having read some of the reviews it seems that the formal night appears to be casual rather than tux or lounge suit. I wonder if you can tell me what the dress code was like on your cruise as I want to make sure that I am not over or undressed on the formal night. Thanks in anticipation of you reply.

My husband and I cruised this Ship from Dubai to Singapore in March. I agree 100% with the review apart from our Cabin Steward was great. We did a 3-week cruise, and only had air conditioning for the final four nights. Complaint after complaint went in until I husband fetched the Engineer out at 2am in the morning for him to tell us the valve to our cabin was closed! I had been sleeping on deck! The Officers were rude to the point of mimicking passengers in front of us - the supposedly English Speaking rep was rude and arrogant - even told my husband he couldn't be bothered it was only the British who complained. We felt we had been discriminated against as we were British!!! There was an Italian Night, an italian Mr & Mrs Nights - all nationalities were on the boat. The 5euros per person per day were a bone of contention to us too - we were told that we should have checked this out before we purchased the cruise, which was done with Virgin Holidays on the telephone. We knew nothing of this charge until our deposit had been taken! Five euros each per day over 21 days adds up! Three times I requested a breakdown of this money, am still waiting. Was told all kinds of stories! The self-service on one side of the boat was out of commission for the first 4 days, then the other side was out of commission for a further 10 days - we have photographs of the work going on. A serious accident waiting to happen! Indeed, there were a few on board. The waiters, waitresses, stuards, restaurant staff exceptional - Costa do not deserve staff like them! The managers were rude and insolent to their staff, shouting and verballing abusing them in front of passengers - they just did not care! I am diabetic and also disabled. I had to fill in a 17 page report for Costa, including a letter from my GP, and with all this paperwork I requested diabetic meals on the plane and also assistance at the airport. Both Virgin and Costa were told this, but I got neither! Treatment was appauling! The Restaurant Staff were exception I only got food I was supposed to have, even to the fact that I was presented with 8-9 small diabetic biscuits each evening - a birthday was held on our table, but our waiter refused me a piece of cake! What a wonderful gesture! I did appreciate it. He looked after me exceptionally well. Some of the berthing areas were very bad - Goa saw us in the middle of a coal field, Mumbai we were behind the Indian Navy, when we arrived at Patong beach (2 days supposedly) it was wonderful - we actually anchored off the beach - the boat look good fromthe shore! We were looking forward to having a trip around, coming back to the ship for a nap, then heading ashore for some night life, but this was not to be! The Captain decided he was taking us to the other side of the island and we had to be on board for 10.30, sailing at 11pm for a rat-infested field about a 15 minute taxi ride from anywhere - and by the way, the taxi drivers wanted $60 one way, and no bargaining! We had travelled on a Costa Cruise in 1992 and we said then that if this had been our first cruise, it certainly would have been our last! We thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt and try them again, the itineraly what what we were looking for, but if anything I think its worse. Virgin told us Classica was a 4 star boat - I souldn't reckon it to a 2 star floating butlins! Plastic Chairs, Rude officers, Exceptionally rude Managers over staff, and for the english speaking rep - he needs sacking! Very poor indeed.

Hope you enjoy this cruise. The cities in Japan are all very easy to access from the ports, mainly by spotlessly clean local trains and buses. In Tokyo the No 5 bus is just outside the immigration building. It takes you into the main railway station. There is a red city tour bus (like those in most big cities) but this must be booked in the office near the railway station. You are allocated a seat and it appears that you can't hop on and off. We caught the local Shitamachi sightseeing bus outside the Maranouchi North Exit of the station and this you can hop on and off - cost 200 yen each. It takes you round several main attractions and was extremely good value. You can go by train to Hakone to see Mount Fuji (in the distance). This involves a couple of train changes but it quite easy once you find your bearings and it well worth the effort. the scenery is fabulous. Give yourself plenty of time as you need to be back for the ship leaving. Try to plan your trips in advance as this saves precious time on the day. Ask for help if necessary. The Japanese are EXTREMELY helpful and patient and very keen to converse.Learn a few words of Japanese too as they really appreciate your efforts to speak their language. Contact the Japanese Tourist Office, 12 Nicholas Lane, London, EC4N 7BN. They will send you loads of info, maps, brochures, etc. In Hong Kong a visit to Victoria Peak is a must as well as Aberdeen and Stanley Market. Taiwan - take a taxi and go up the 101 Tower in Taipei. The drivers here are all mental though !!!!! All the Japanese stops are wonderful - Naha/Okinawa - visit the underground bunker; Kobe/Osaka/Kyoto - all very accessible by train and lots to see here (the Bullet Train was a bit disappointing); Tokyo (see above) and Nagasaki - Peace Park, Cathedral, etc. are all near each other and easily seen using the local tram which stops just outside the port. South Korea - don't bother with the free shuttle bus unless you want to stock up on Gucchi, Prada, etc. Take a local taxi and plan your day as there isn't much time. Share with another couple to keep cost down. Shanghai - again plan ahead and use local taxis which are metered and very cheap. To sum up, the itinerary is excellent but forward planning is a MUST due to limited time in each port. Use local bus, train and taxis - always cheaper and you will see what you want to see and not what the excursion dictates. Share the cost of taxis if you can. Be prepared for little or no help from the so called "English speaking reps". They couldn't care less unless you are buying their exorbitantly priced excursions. Always remember to ensure that you know exactly where the ship is for your return journey and have this written down so you can show it to the taxi driver, etc. Use a Nationwide Visa card as they do not charge for use abroad. There are plenty of ATM machines but it is useful to have a little local currency in advance for transport costs. Have a great holiday - it really is a fantastic experience.
