Not a cruise we would want to repeat

My wife and myself boarded the Quest at a port fairly near Beijing China after spending 3 days in the city pre cruise and we stayed 2/3 days post cruise in Hong Kong. Both cities were fascinating and the two hotels were great.
Check in for the cruise meant a lot of waiting around in a very cold and basic terminal building. Most passengers seemed to accept this because of the health problems on the previous cruise and the need to sanitize the ship before we boarded. We did not know anything about the major outbreakof gastroenteritis/norovirus until we reached the port. Later we were told by the crew that the virus was a problem for a number of previous cruises! We had no means of verifying this but we were told by the Cruise Director that way over 100 passengers had become ill with the virus on the immediate previous cruise. During the cruise it was clear that some of the port health authorities thought it was very serious. They at first refused permission for crew/passengers to land. It seemed to take a lot of negotiation and time to get the ship cleared. It became clear that the cruise should have been cancelled before we left the UK. This was not the end of the check in problems. We were transfered to the quayside and left waiting in freezing temperatures and with a high wind chill factor. By the time we boarded the ship every one was shivering. Not a great start.
The cruise was dominated by the outbreak of gastroenteritis/norovirus. Most passengers seemed to feel that the problem was greater than Azamara admitted to. The crew seemed overwhelmed with the additional cleaning/duties made worse by the fact that many of them were off sick. Service on board was very variable and it was clear that there was a lack of supervision and mamagement. Some staff gave excellent service on their own whilst others took advantage of the situation to do as little as possible. Service by Guest Relations was very poor. This was not helped when the Hotel Director left the ship early in the cruise with no replacement! Lack of heating in the cabins, non availability hot water and a major draught problem with the balcony doors at a time when temperatures were way below freezing. All cabin items such as water, ice, flowers and fruit were taken away. Captain Club functions were cancelled.
We had a very good service in our stateroom but other guests did not fair so well. Food and sevice in the speciality restaurants were outstanding. The itinerary of the cruise was excellent and very interesting and was the saving factor of the cruise. To put our comments in perspective we have been on 10 (12-14 day) cruises with the Royal Caribbean Group using all three of their cruiselines, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity as well as Azamara

I am going on the Azamara Quest from Hong Kong to Shanghai calling at Beijing, Taiwan and Japan. There seems to be some difference of opinion on whether we need a chinese visa. Could anyone help me on this one and where is best to apply. Many thanks.

My Wife and I where also on this Cruise and in the next but one cabin to Mr and Mrs Lovett, I think he is being rather kind in his review, we had the doors taped up for all but the last three days of the cruise, so a balcony was a waste of time and money, our cabin steward sorry butler never spoke to us nor did we see her for the first week, it was only after I had refused in writing to pay and gratuities on my bill that she introduced herself to us. no choice of pillows Ihad forgotten about all we had expected to receive, no hoovering during the last week it might spread dust, also taken away over the last fw days, where extra large towels, then bed throws and lastly bath robes, we felt if it was not nailed down it would go. A superb Library that was locked up for the duration yet they asked for anyone to leave paper backs that they had finished with, so others could read them. Being marched in front of Japanese Health people, collect passport, present ourselves, heat seeking cameras checking us, and then they took our temperatures before we handed our passports back. I am sure that a lot of this is food poising and nothing else, people we met had gone down sick on the 2nd full day after eating on the first full day at lunchtime in the buffet and eating look warm turkey, which most of us had left, we refused to eat in there as the food was never hot. I would say that the excellent hotel in Beijing was not part of the Azamara trip, but put together by the Cruise co that we booked with, this ship is not suitable for cold climates as not only is it not wind proof but windows on balconies are single glazed In over 25 cruises with the majority of cruise lines, this was certainly the worst we have experienced andall complaints have been very poorly dealt with, I wrote twice on the ship recd tel calls and was assured that I would be contacted by Miami. on return wrote to our booking company and eventually recd a very unsatisfactory reply from Royal Caribbean, UK, replied to them and have heard nothing since, also wrote to Miami some weeks ago and have heard nothing, am going on the new Solstice in Dec transatlantic, so hope that is as good as they say or will jump ship. I also travelled on this cruise and agree totally This was a badly run ship. On the food quality i would disagree on four stars one star is probably more correct Our meals varied from being very cold to warmish .we were regularly served coffee in broken or chipped cups and the se;f serve restaurant was not hygenic food cold , tables cracked , staff not covering hair and wearing outdoor clothes when serving and they wonder why passengers fell ill ???
