Cruise Line: Carnival Cruises Times cruised before: 3-5
Cruise Ship: Carnival Victory Sailed: February, 2009
Destination: Caribbean Age: 56-65
We chose the Carnival Victory mainly for the opportunity to visit 6 beautiful caribbean islands in 7 days and we were not disappointed. We boarded the ship in Barbados after spending a week on that delightful but very expensive island ,with about 300 other passengers and I must say it was the most relaxed and easy boarding we have encounted.(The other 3000 people got on and off in San Juan in Puerto Rico)
The ship itself obviously mainly catered for the american market and having read some reviews and descriptions we were quite prepared to avoid the oversell of various things onboard ie Spa treatments..jewellery...photos (although they were quite good but expensive) ect.
The ship itself was kept beautifully clean and sparkley...the crew very very helpful and polite....the food was lovely especially in the Pacific dinning room where the waiters were brilliant(they even brought me 2 desserts one night to try as I could not decided) the only downside to the Buffet at lunch time was that the food was lukewarm.
Our outside cabin was on deck 2....a decent size room with a 3 seater sofa and a large window...it did get a bit noisey when the ship docked which was usually about 7am but after a while we did not notice.
The one thing that did get on our nerves a bit and I know it was because it was A 'FUN' ship and they wanted everyone to join in, was the constant anouncements about activities just about to start. We all had our daily newsletter so knew what was on when and really did not need reminding...YES it was a noisy ship but we managed to find a few quiet places to chill out and read when we wanted to but unfortunatley NOT on the main deck (swimming pool, hot tubs, most of the sun beds ect) where the outside cinema seemed to be on loudly from 10am to midnight. The entertainment in the theatre was OK fairly professional but very American biased and there where some nice solo artist based in various lounges.

Overall a great cruise on a lovely ship to some fantastic places.

We stopped at the Blue Horizon Hotel at Rockley Beach which I booked through On the Beach site we stayed b & b, breakfast only toast & coffee(normal fare unless paying a lot) lovely hotel, a/c room which you will need and just across the road from one of the best beaches in Barbados. We found it to be a very expensive island (£ against $ dosent help)...food especially, a main course costing on average £25 each so a little tip if you like fish, go to Oustins which is a fish market and has huts with barbacues where they cook the fish from that days catch...blue marlin, flying fish ect....for about £12 you get a lovely meal with rice, salad ect. The cheapest thing on the island was the public transport $1.50 a journey for the bus did not matter where you was going...taxis we found expensive....but if you do not mind reggea music then taking one of the white ZR mini buses is a quick way to get around $1.50 again but they will give you change if you have not got the right money which the buses will not and you just flag them down or stand at a bus stop (plus an experience) Holetown and St Lawerences Gap nice places to visit and the Pelican village in Bridgetown. As you probably gather we prefer to do our own thing so we did not go on any of the rather expensive trips from the ship....so if you look at the cruise trip itinery and get an idea what you would like to do on the various islands when you get off the ship you will be met at the quayside by local firms wanting you to go on their trips and you will know a bit more about where you want to go & do....plus these trips are about $20 each so far far cheaper than the ships and they will make sure you are back on time. Not sure about the specialist trips but one thing we usually did was call in at the local tourist office to pick up maps ect. so they could point you in the right direction. The ship does not provide much in the way of info on the ports of call. If you fancy a cup of tea/coffee(no kettle in cabin) first thing in the morning try room service this is free but it is polite to tip the steward at the end of your trip. Hope you enjoy you stay and cruise we have some lovely memories and great pictures of a fab holiday hope your's goes well too.
