When people have asked me how the cruise was since I arrived home I have said it was a 5 star cruise with 3 star service. I cannot believe the extra money that we had to spend once we were on the boat just to be able to get by day to day. To even have to buy a glass of water to have with your evening meal seems ridiculous. I can understand not giving alcohol away for free but a glass of water was expected with the meal. Then there was the irony of having a duty free on board but then putting signs up saying if you bought anything they would keep it till the end of the cruise as you were not allowed it on board and you couldnt bring anything on from a port either.

Twice during the cruise extra money was expected just to be able to get to the city via a bus service - again not mentioned when booking.

We decided that we would like to take one of the excursions to Tunis and paid our 40 euros each for the tour. Again when we got part way round we were told that we would have to pay for an additional bus to take us to the village because our bus couldnt go there. When you have paid for a trip, i wouldnt then expect to have to pay for an extras bus once on there.

On a final note with money - I was disgusted to find that part way through the cruise 6 euros per day per person had been taken from our account for tips fopr the crew. I dont mind paying tips but I would like to choose how much this should be. For some people, ourselves included, the holiday had been saved up for and was a special treat so to have all of these on costs that were not evident at the time of booking came as quite a shock.

The boat itself was lovely and the cleanliness was good. Meals were well prepared and though the buffets got very boring being almost the same day in day out, the evening meal was always different and catered for many tastes. The staff were very friendly though too pushy for tips during the last day of the cruise.

Quality of Food3
The range on the buffet was good though changed very little during the week. Evening meal was very good in LÍbiscus
Entertainment2
The most enjoyable artists were the acrobats. the least was the magician - it was a cringeworthy experience and we actually left the theatre.
Shore Excursions3
least favourite was Tunis - it was such a long way to go to get to only have a morning off the boat. The best was barcelona by far
Staff3
No one really stood out individually but the waiting staff and the cabin staff were good
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities2
There was a lot of choice onboard during the daytime but the choices were very similar each evening
Cabins3
The cabin was very good, plenty space and kept clean but being next to the cleaning/staff station meant that at 3.30am every day a trolly was wheeled very loudly infront of the door and there was quite a lot of noise at other times too
Overall Rating2

We had a cruise on this ship (Orchestra) in january this year (10 days for 660 with balcony !!) and found the same issues. Lovely posh ship and great cabins but also tips were added on the final day and had them removed. In contrast we have just been on Island Star for two weeks . The staff were fantastic and so was more or less everything, the food and choice of food on the star was better than MSC . Even though Island Star itself is much older we prefer the relaxed british way and some of the "bigger newer ships" seems to have less space per customer and more queues. Definatly "atmosphere" is the biggest differance..

We are going on Orchestra later this month but now I'm worried! I don't mind tipping but hate the fact that tips are taken forgranted. If you ask for tips to be removed and do the tipping directly is it a big issue? I would usualy have a glass or 2 of wine with dinner but not at lunch. From what I read is it necessry to buy bottle water (I expect inflated prices) just to get something to drink?

Read my comment below about water & no big deal to remove tips on MSC, ask & they will give you a form to fill in, simple!

Hi! A couple of points that catch first timers. Ask for 'ships water', that's the 'freeby' stuff that comes in a jug from the tap. Secondly if your not happy with the service charge (tips), you go to the desk & ask them to remove it, & pay staff as you feel fit.

I agree about tips. We cruise alot and we always go to reception on boarding and ask to be taken off of the computor for tips. We then tip as we see fit. Otherwise on some lines it can be hundreds of pounds each added to your bill.
