P&O ship Arcadia through the Panama Canal

Reviewed By: Ogle, Prestwich on 12th Aug 2008

Cruise Ship: Arcadia Sailed: December, 2007
Destination: Panama Canal Age: 56-65
We took the P&O ship Arcadia to go through the Panama Canal; that was the prime reason for booking the cruise. The holiday began with a flight to Barbados, the fight was good with no problems. Sailed from Barbados the same day and went next to Grenada, lovely island-cruises-summer-holidays/">island and nice people. We took a taxi around the island rather than a coach trip; not expensive and saw the wholes island. Next we went to Aruba in the Dutch Antilles, not a lot there, a small market and local shops. Then Aruba in the Dutch Antilles, nice town, easy to find wildlife and saw Marine Iguanas and Humming birds close to the ship. Took a trip on a semi-submersible to see a sunken German WW2 ship, lots of sea life, well worth it. Next on to Limon in Costa Rica; small market near ship with better prices than the shops on tour. Took a tour to see the Tortuguero Canals, in-land waterways with plenty of wildlife and saw Sloths, big Iguanas and a crocodile (? - not sure if the croc was a set-up for the tourists apparently it was still in the same place for another tour later the same day). Went on the visit a banana plantation. All in all a good trip in spite of the dubious croc. Then the highlight of the trip The Panama Canal. Even non-engineers should like this, fascinating to see how it all works. It took all day to pass through but a great experience. When the ship sailed through the lake between the first and the last locks the silence was incredible. The passes through very slowly and our cabin was towards the front so we experience virtually total silence. That night we took a tour round the Miraflores Locks and Museum well worth it. Next on to Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala. A very poor country with friendly people but don't go too hard on them when battering for goods. Took a trip to Lake Atitlan and stopped at a town called Panajachel, it was Christmas Eve and the town was dressed for a carnival. A good trip and worth the cost. The next stop was at Huatulco in Mexico. A new tourist development on the Pacific side similar to Cancun in the Caribbean. It is still being developed but the cruise terminal is right in the centre of town at this stage it has not become too commercialised is very clean with friendly people. Finally to Acapulco, very commercialised and busy the cliff divers were great. A long flight hole from here though, 12 hours. Arcadia itself was good we had not been on it before and are now due to sail with her again from Mumbi to Australia. The cabins are roomy and well appointed and the glass sided balconies give an unrestricted view. The service from the crew was good; the entertainment excellent and the food was good. Overall we would recommend her.

Re your cruise from Mumbai to Australia. My wife and I are joining the Arcadia in Southhampton on the 5th January 2009 to Bangkok. Re the visa for Mumbai do you really need to have a multi entry visa or will the tourist visa suffice. I can't see why you would need the multi entry when we are visiting only one port in India. Also you will find it much cheaper applying to the Indian consulate yourself for your Visa as P and O want £95 vat to do it for you. I just thought you might know and thats why I'm asking before going to the Consulate In Edinburgh. Might see you on the ship. All the Best. Fred Lee
