Jewels Of The Mediterranean - fantastic!

Reviewed By: Plant, Walsall on 19th Jul 2008
Cruise Line: Thomson Cruises Times cruised before: 1-2
Cruise Ship: Thomson Destiny Sailed: July, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 18-25
Got home from the Thomson Destiny 2 days ago - didn't want to come home! One of the best things about this ship has got to be the amazing food available! There are 2 restaurants on board - The Seven Seas Restaurant, which is a buffet or waiter service for breakfast with open seating, open seating waiter service at lunch, and set seating (1845 of 2045 sittings) waiter service for evening meal. There is also the Lido Cafe which is a 24 hour buffet. We mostly used the Seven Seas as we enjoyed the luxury of waiter service, but the food was pretty much the same in the Lido Cafe. There was also a poolside grill at lunchtime serving salads, pizza, hot dogs, burgers and jacket potatoes.

Service was fantastic, the staff could not do enough for you. Our housekeeper, Olivia, was great. 1 day we were both very sea sick and she looked after us and told us what to do to feel better. She was also great fun and blew us kisses when she saw us around the ship. Because the evening meal is set seating, you get to know your food and wine waiters. Again they were wonderful and remembered your names after the first day. Our wine waiter even remembered our room number for our drinks bill.

Our cabin was quite small and maybe a bit dated, but we weren't disappointed as I have cruised before and it was expected. The bathroom was very small, but this was the same as the previous ship I had been on (island-cruises-summer-holidays/'>Island Escape). The room was always clean, tidy and even though it was dated everything worked properly and it wasn't damaged at all. The voltage is the room is 110 so my hair straightners didn't work :( and there was only one plug socket, but we didn't really mind anyway.

We went on one excursion - Herculaneum at Naples. We're glad we went but the tour guide wasn't fantastic. We also wished we had longer there as we wanted to look at things more closely, we felt quite rushed. I'd recommend going on your own (not with a cruise excursion), as it was only about a 20 min drive and I think you could see things at your own pace.

There was plenty to do on board all the time - quizzes, sports, gyms, childrens activities etc. We didn't do any of the quizzes at all as it's not really our thing, but anyone we spoke to who did said it was really good. Everyday they also had board games out in one of the bars, so I think there was definitely something for everyone (sunbathing for me)!!

The shows are very cheesy - cabaret style. But this is a cruising tradition so I guess most people who cruise like that kind of thing. It's not really our thing, but there was a comedian a couple of nights who was fantastic!!!! From the two cabaret shows we did see, we didn't really think the entertainers had very good voices to be honest, but the dancing was good.

I'd definitely recommend this cruise. There was such a range of different people there and it was very intimate and friendly. We think we were the yongest couple there (aged 19 & 23), and the oldest people we met were 83 and celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary! There was also quite a few families with children there, and as I said before there was plenty for everyone to do. We loved the Thomson Destiny!
Quality of Food5
Seven Seas Restaurant - so much variety!
Entertainment2
Taffy Spencer the comedian - fantastic! I'd pay to see him again! But the cabaret shows - not really my cup of tea.
Shore Excursions2
Just went to Herculaneum. It was ok but I'd probably do my own thing if I went on this ship again.
Staff5
Our housekeeper for looking after us when we were ill and for making us a crab out of towels on our bed. And our waiters and wine waiter for just being great people!
