P&Os Aurora World Cruise Nightmare 2008

Reviewed By: Tyrer, Southport on 5th Jul 2008

Without doubt the worst cruise my wife and I have ever been on. We have done 40+. P&O Aurora World Cruise 7/1/08 to 28/3/08. We gave up eating dinner in the main restaurant after one week, warm food on cold plates, tasteless dishes, well done steak served with blood oozing from it,a could,nt care less waiter who insisted on wiping his nose on the back of his hand. We paid the extra and ate in the bistro. My wife paid in advance for P&Os celebration package for my birthday, It failed to arrive. There smoking policy was changed on the day we boarded without any notice, after me enquiring only a couple of days before sailing I was told all bars have a smoking area. NOT SO only one bar allowed smoking and the open air Pennent bar. I dont know where the officers hide but you strugle to find one if you have a complaint. Our cabin door lock was faulty and it took two and a half weeks to get repaired, when the man arrived to repair it, it was done in 2 minutes.I could go on, but whats the point P&O DONT WANT TO KNOW. And after returning home they inform us there was an outbreak of Hepatitis E on board, shame they did,nt mention it when it started in mid February.

we have sailed on the aurora many times and could not find fault on any of them,we have never ever had a waiter who was not a credit to po.,as for saying po couldnt care less that is rubbish, they care very much ,nothing has ever been to much trouble for them, perhaps you had a bad attitude to the staff

Is he talking about the same cruise we went on? We had a wonderful 80 days on Aurora and yes we did catch 2 colds each but apart from that we were fine. You had to be very fussy to find anything wrong with the food considering there were so many mouths to feed. At home we would easily pay £50.00 for a similar evening meal so we were more than happy. Any small problems with the cabin etc. was immediately sorted out with courteous attention. Also all the crew and staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. Sometimes I think that it very much a case of treating people the way you want to be treated yourself.

We are considering a world cruise in the next couple of years and appreciate these comments. I take the view, as does the poster "Burrows" that seasoned cruisers will usually have a gripe and in our experience with P O any minor things like loos breaking down they have sorted it without a fuss but we haven't sat in our cabin twiddling our thumbs and timing the appearance of the engineer. We have simply got on with it and gone off round the ship. I fully support the comments about the excellent staff- some people seem to regards themselves as a cut above and frankly if they start with an attitude like that they ought to go on a different cruise to me. The only concern I have is that we will be lumbered sharing 80 days with negative people. That's my nightmare!

I fully agree with your last comment. My partner and I have always greeted and treated staff that we have come into contact with, like friends rather than servants, stopping for a chat where possible, and showing THEM respect. I myself have noticed that many people who have cruised many times before, and can obviously afford it, do seem to generally be less happy with most things onboard than some others. Happy cruising.
