MEDITTERANEAN CRUISE, VENTURA,

Reviewed By: Worthington, Doncaster on 10th May 2008

We have just returned from a 7 day cruise on Ventura and were looking forward to the holiday having cruised with P&O in the past. However, it will be some time before we do so again.

Tours were arranged on days when the shops were shut - surely the organisers should have been aware of this fact.

Freedom dining is anything but! Having tried to book one morning for dinner the following day we were told this was not possible and to turn up at 7.30pm as there should be a table at that time. We were disappointed, when arriving at the dining room at 7.30pm as requested, to be told that we could not dine then and to return at 9.30 pm. So much for 'freedom' dining! P&O just haven't got this right yet.
We were told we could dine at any time if we joined others at a table but had we wished for this option would have booked Club dining in the first place.
One one occasion when we did manage to book a table we were served so quickly we were out of the dining room within an hour. The dessert, cheese and biscuits, and coffee all arrived together. The food in the dining room was average, nothing memorable and certainly not as good as NCL and Princess.

The first morning on board we tried to book a table in the White Room only to be told that it was full for the whole week!

Meals in the East restaurant were excellent, unhurried and well worth the additional charge of £20.

Superior too was the entertainment, some of the best we have seen on any cruise. There were 3 different timings for the shows which seems an excellent idea and also plenty of other entertainment choices on the ship. 10 out of 10 to P&O in this instance.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, but not so some of the officers who appeared to be dismissive when anyone approached them with concerns

I agree with the review and find the comments about the White room puzzling, as we booked at the end of the second day and on arrival for the meal there were plenty of empty tables. However Worthington had a lucky escape and saved himself(?) fifty quid. In East the meals were better, however after a strong eastern Decor and as far as I can tell all female oriental serving staff, very pretty they all were, the meals were supposed to be an eastern fusion, I ordered the Monkfish Tempura, which arrived with fingers of sweet potato and a pea compote, the batter on the Monkfish was far to heavy to be tempura, which made me realise, this essentialy Fish, Chips and mushy peas, so not that eastern after all. You can't expect there to be a table available for everyone at everytime they might want one in the sent numbers they need. It is just the same on land
