Iberia And Canaries on wonderful Oceana

We thoroughly enjoyed our Canaries cruise on the lovely Oceana. The weather was glorious all the way and all the ports were interesting. we would have liked to spend more time in La Corunna, Spain, but it was only a half day's stay here. All the staff were friendly and helpful and it was nice to hear the Captain, Chris Wells every day. The entertainment was very good, especially the Headliners Theatre Company - a lovely group of singers and dancers who performed great shows. We also enjoyed The Twins illusionists who were on for one night only when we were in Lisbon. We have seen them on Arcadia in 2005 so were delighted to discover they were to be performing on Oceana. The seas were mostly kind to us, even in the Bay of Biscay. We only had a couple of rough days on the way back.
The only downside was the whole freedom dining experience. We had booked freedom on the understanding that bookings were taken for up to 2 nights ahead, saying what time you wished to dine and table size. When we got on board to our dismay that system had changed, and it was first come first served. This meant queing for up to an hour every night to get the table size we preferred, and to eat early. The pager system was offered to us, but this is no good as we prefer to eat early, and were told that after the 6 00 diners were finished, the next tables became free at 8 00. The food was wonderful, but the whole experience disappointing due to the changes. Many people queing with us felt the same, and we were all given questionnaires to complete on freedom dining alone, so they must have been aware that we were not happy with it. I would never have booked freedom under these current, changed, arrangements. Otherwise, a wonderful cruise.
