Thomson plots new casual cruise concept using island-cruises-summer-holidays/">Island Escape

A new casual cruise concept from Thomson will run alongside the Thomson fleet From next summer 09 TUI is to create a new budget price casual cruise offering based on the highly successful Island format which aims to attract 1st time family cruisers The Island Escape will join the the new set up in October 09

In the meantime, Island Cruises is working to re accommodate between 7,000 to 10,000 passengers booked on its second ship Island Star which is to move to Spanish Pullmantur next April

It looks like Island Cruises may cease to exist after summer 09, its a sad day for all Island lovers, we are devastated.

I was on the Island Escape in 2007 and I'm sorry to say it was the worst cruise of my life. The ports were great, the food and ship left a lot to be desired - poor housekeeping in the cabins and the beachcomber was a mess - really not a fit place to eat food. The pool area was shoddy and the glass (perspex) enclosed stairway up to the lookout (or whatever it was called) leaked when it rained. Island Cruises never really got going as a cruise company - casual does not mean shoddy. I have heard that the Island Star is a better ship (and better run ship) so its a pity it is not the one that goes to Thomson's. I have cruised on several of the Thomson ships (including the much lamented Topaz and (soon to be gone) Emerald. Thomson know how to run a cruise company - Island never got it right. Standards on the Island Escape could not have been lower. I accept that people on cruises on the IE enjoyed themselves but that must have been in spite of the ship, not because of her. First time cruisers may have had a great time but they had nothing to compare it with. I love budget cruising because I travel alone and single supplements can be very steep. However, with a good early booking deal, I have managed to cruise on several mid market ships for less than I paid for the Island Escape and with higher standards.

Its all a bit confusing but surely Island escape will sail under that brand next summer Then the Island Escape will change to Thomson colors in October? Meanwhile Thomsons have developed a new casual cruise concept which must be using one of their existing ships. It seems to me that the difference between Thomsons and Island is casual style cruising does not have a formal restaurant, if so it would be easy to convert the formal restaurant to a buffet and save a load of money on the waiters! Still confused though.

Hello nope I have never cruised with Thomson, I have only ever cruised with Island, Its devastating but true that muched loved Island cruises will cease to exist after october 09 when the island escape will be absorbed into the Thomson fleet, Island star will sail the Caribbean until march 09 all cruises on the island star after that date including the Caribbean Journey cruise back to Palma on 26/03/09 are cancelled.....so there will be no cruises with Island on the star or the escape after october 09, news & press releases are available on websites like travelmole & cruisecritic and news on the island star cancellations are on the thomson website http://www.thomson.co.uk/cruise/island-cruises.html
