RCL and TUI terminate Island Stars charter

Reviewed By: sparrow, warminster on 8th Oct 2008
Cruise Line: Island Cruises Times cruised before: 3-5
Cruise Ship: Island Star Sailed: April, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 46-55
Royal Caribbean Cruises has agreed to sell its 50 percent interest in island-cruises-summer-holidays/">Island Cruises to TUI and has terminated the Island Star's charter, RCC own the Island Star and had chartered it Island Cruises, Royal Caribbean plans to redeploy the Island Star to Spanish Cruise line Pullmantur when it returns from the Caribbean in April 2009, this is very disappointing for those people who had booked or were planning a cruise on the Island Star next summer, I hope this doesn't mean that TUI will now concentrate on its Thomson cruise fleet as many had feared and transfer the Island escape to them, many people luv Island cruises me among st them I will really miss the Island Star

Agree with everything positive said. We've cruised with island 3 times and they're ambiance was unique. We're booked for the caribbean in 2009 on Island Star, but will probably cancel as we cruised previously with Thomson and were less than impressed. The loss of Island Cruises is very sad indeed.

Why must something that worked so well be broken up! Another case of accountants sat in their plush offices working out the sums and deciding where the money will go! This cruise Co although not plush created a lovely memorable holiday for nearly all who travelled with them. The staff and crew were exceptional along with the Captains. So many people will be upset by this. Not everyone wants a climbing wall and to spend lovely days in the Med or Carribean skating indoors on an ice rink! What are they thinking.? The concept of Island Cruises worked so well and for myself , my wife and even my 13 year old Son we will seriously miss the Island Star and what Island Cruises stood for. I hope they dont live to regret it.

I would like to add to this comment. We too as a family have sailed on the island star 4 times and have a holiday booked for May 2009 and were taking along my parents for their first ever cruise. We had booked the best rooms on board and were really really looking forward to it as we have had such great times on board. Does anyone know if we will get our money back as us like I am sure most peole do not want to sail on any other Ship. Why do companies do this when the ship was almost fully booked on each and every trip ? Such a shame, we will miss the lovely friendly atmosphere and the fabulous staff. This ship rated 9/10 for everything so take absolutely no notice what so ever of the rubbish reports that have been posted. A most dissapointed Island Star traveller.

Hello I have been affected by this also. I have just spoken to my travel agent and Thomson have several offers . I was going on a transatlantic cruise with my wife . I have now been offered a thomson transatlantic which I have accepted. I believe it was a good deal. They are also offering full refund and other deals which I do not know about. I know this does not compensate for the cruise you looked forward to but I hope this helps. I would advise you contact your travel agent as soon as possible as the quicker you get in the more choice you will have . Best of luck

Much the same as everybody else who has commented, I am gutted at this news. We were on the point of booking a cruise next May for about 10 of us !!! Not sure yet if we will swop to the Island Escape, but we will be very sad not to see the fabulous friendly Island Star staff again. Our booking was also going to take advantage of the 'Captain's Offer' (free upgrade etc), if booked before the end of October. Double whammy !

Word of warning for people who still want to cruise with Star when it is taken over by the Spanish cruise line Pulmantur. I have read lots of reviews from people who have said that Spanish passengers on other cruise lines are worse than the Italians for bad manners etc. and I didn't believe it until I went on Star a couple of weeks ago. I had a couple of 'run ins' with the Spanish. On one occasion standing in line for breakfast a group of Spaniads walked straight to the front of the queue, well, I wasn't having, that so told them so. On another occasion my son vacated his sunbed for 10mins to get a cup of tea and a couple of Spanish threw his towel off the bed and sat down. (I was watching from elsewhere) my son had words with them, after all you can leave your sunbed for 30mins. Other passengers I spoke to had problems with our spanish friends as well. There wasn't a lot of Spanish on board but once Star joins the spanish fleet I wouldn't advise our people to sail with her. You have been warned.
