Just returned from Canaries on P&O Oceana. My son got married on board and it went extremely well, the captain, Chris Wells, performed the ceremony and he was first rate, put everyone at ease. We had a wedding organiser who arranged everything from the cake, flowers, hairdresser etc. nothing was left to chance, it all ran like clockwork, perfect. The only down side was the price of the wedding photographs. For the full set with album £1,450 this is the cost of a cruise. It was surgested that we could have a CD with all the photographs on and print them ourselves but this was £600. P&O really need to look at this as it was the only blot on a perfect dat.
As for the rest of the cruise, Oceana is a lovely ship if a little more flamboyant than Arcadia which I sailed on last year and which I preferred. Oceana certainly doesn't ride the heavy seas very well, on the return leg we had rolling decks for a couple of days, motion discomfort bags were on all internal stairways and there was some sickly noises coming from the tiolets. We spoke to some people who didn't leave their cabin during this time as laying down does help. As I said previously we sailed on Arcadia last year in much heavier seas with hardly any movement.
P&O do set the standard for food, I couldn't fault it at all. I've been on eleven cruises with various cruise lines but the food on P&O beat them all. Some of the wedding party are traditional British eaters, roast beef and yorkshire pudding but they went home half a stone heavier.
Staff from the captain down were excellent, all very polite and professional, nothing too much trouble. This is the same on most cruise lines but P&O seem to have the edge over the others. (I haven't been on Cunard yet)
Entertainment was a little disappointing, Headliners were very good and full of energy, also Peter Piper was very funny but that was about it for me. There was a classical pianist but that wasn't my scene. I found it difficult to find things to do during the day as I'm not a sun worshiper. The main theatre seemed a little small so the same show was put on two days running so everyone had a chance to see it, never experienced this before.
I intend to try other P&O ships but the two I've sailed on so far I prefer Arcadia, but that's me, I've spoken to others who think the opposite.
