Great Cruise but P&O again? YES - Oceana again? NO

Reviewed By: Gildersleeves, Beckenham on 4th Oct 2008
Cruise Line: P&O Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Oceana Sailed: September, 2008
Destination: Canaries Age: 46-55
Just arrived back from another good cruise with P&O. It was a 12 night cruise to Iberia and the Canaries on board the Oceana.
Arrived at Southampton and found CPS parking very efficient. Check in began on time at noon and we were soon on board enjoying a drink in the Yacht club. Our room was at the back of the ship and we got great views from our balcony.
I have heard varying comments about the Oceana before regarding a "Butlins feel" sometimes. You really do have to book your cruises and ships wisely. On this trip there were 2055 passengers of which only 95 were children. Therefore the average age is higher and less likely to get too boisterous! On the cruises a few weeks earlier there were over 500 kids which might mean a different feel. But if things like the great British send off in Lisbon , where you wave union Jacks and sing we love Vindaloo don't appeal to you, then there was a nice sedate quiz you could join in downstairs. The Oceania is classed as a family ship so choose wisely!

The food on board was Ok. The Horizon Grill seves really nice food, but we were dissapointed with the new Marco Pierre White food in Le Jardin. It was open plan and hardly intimate dining such as the Gary Rhodes on board the Oriana.
The Plaza can get very busy but fortunately the weather was good enough for people to spill outside to ease congestion.
The themed nights were Ok in there.

All the staff try very hard to make your experience a special one and most have a cheery smile on their faces. As most don't get a day off in 9 months that's some going!

The weather at all ports was lovely from 21.C in La Coruna to 33.C in Gran Canaria. The trip down to Tenerife was lovely and smooth (even Biscay behaved!) and I've never seen the Atlantic so smooth. Met up with the Independence of the seas in Lisbon and raced it back to Southampton!

But here comes the but! We went on the Oceana in April on a 2 nighter and had the same cabin at the back of the ship. It seemed to me then that the ship was less stable than the others in only moderate seas and was concerned about Biscay and the Atlantic. I was told then that the Oceana was designed for the calm water of the Carribean rather than the Atlantic and hence it's less stable than say the Oriana.
As I said all the way down to tenerife the seas were really calm. But on the way back we encountered some averagely rough seas. Our cabin lurched from side to side and made standing difficult. But the worst part was coming out of Vigo. Biscay was rough but not as bad as I've seen it. The ship was not coping well and at 1245am we hit a large wave which violently shook our cabin so much that the glassware in our room went flying and shattered all over the carpet. Our cabin attendent told us the following morning that all 6 cabins he looks after had some damage. I thought it might be because we were at the stern. But taliking to other passengers they felt it to and many, like us, will not go back on this ship purely because of it''s stability.
The captain said it handled the weather moderately well. Sorry we and others disagree! and by the way the captain was really good and informative throughout the journey!

However it did not spoil the trip - just next time Oriana for us!

We were on the same cruise. We too had a great time. Food, entertainment, no complaints. However, I have to agree with you with regard to having a cabin at the stern of the ship. This would have been our 15th cruise. We normally have a midship cabin. On this occasion we went for a suite at the stern. Big mistake. I was extremely ill with the lurching of the cabin. I missed dinner and the Portunus party on one night as i felt too ill to go. I just could not stand up without feeling sick. Even going across the Bay, i spent most of the time laying down. Going out was fine it was just some of the journey home. We have been on Oceana 3 times and during all of our other cruises I have never been ill. Andrew, our butler told us their were 46 glasses smashed on that particular night, in the six cabins he looked after. We lost 8 glasses. So note for future cruises. Do not book a cabin at the stern of the ship. We have two cruises booked for next year and we have mid ship suites on them. So hopefully I will be fine.
