Foodies Delight on Nautica

Reviewed By: DOYLE, LYTHAM ST ANNES on 21st Aug 2008
Cruise Line: Oceania Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Nautica Sailed: July, 2008
Destination: Mediterranean Age: 56-65
Returned on the 12th august from our first cruise with Oceania cruises and it lived up to all the promises of the brochure. The food was top class, memorable ice cream made on board every day, steaks, lobster and desserts were exceptional, if you enjoy good food this experience is for you, with afternoon tea not to be missed. Approx 80% of guests were American, with the remaining 40% split between British, New Zealandanders, Austrailian and South Africans. this provided a very sociable club atmosphere with all nationalities mixing very well. The down side to the cruise was expensive tours which included a number of "local selling opportunities"! which annoyed many passengers and the entertainment was limited. However for high end service fantastic staff this cruise is very good value for money. However I would not recomend starting from Instanbul, arrival at this airport was a nightmare, it took 2 hours to move through passport control and there is no air conditioning, water or staff to mange the queues!

Having been on the previous cruise (31 July, Istanbul-Rome), as well as Beijing-Hong Kong (in March/April) we can concur about the 'local selling opportunities'. Someone at Oceania HQ is clearly of the view that US/Canadian citizens 'of a certain age' (70-80% of the passengers in March, and probably 40-50% in August) want nothing more than to spend time and money being sold to, even at the expense of the sights that most 'normal' people have come to see. If I go to Kusadasi, it's to stroll round Ephesus, NOT to run breathlessly round it so I can spend an hour back in Kusadasi where they try really hard to sell you a carpet.
