Glories of Past Civilizations aboard Nautica

For our first ever cruise, my wife & I booked on the Oceania Nautica taking us on their "Glories of Past Civilizations", a 12 night cruise starting off at Istanbul & finishing (yesterday) at Civitavecchia, Rome. En route we had stopovers at Greek & Italian locations as well as Kusadasi, Turkey.

I had been reluctant to enter the world of cruising, since I anticipated being unable to resist the culinary pleasures on offer & my worst (?) fears were quickly realised. The food standard & quality was of the highest order, especially when one considers that they are catering for about 640 guests. We used 3 of the 4 restaurants, where open dining was available & no supplements applicable to the 2 fine dining options. The wine list was extensive & I felt reasonably priced, although subject to an 18% gratuity.

One of the many highlights was taking a breakfast buffet on the open stern deck area where the extremely courteous & professional staff (made up from over 40 nationalities we were advised) were very attentive. This seemed to set the tone for the day so we didn't explore the served breakfast offer available in the Grand Dining Room.

Similarly on most days we took buffet lunch on the Terrace Cafe with the odd change to the Waves Grill for a tasty burger & milkshake.

For us, the sub 1 hour entertainment after dinner was sufficient & the puppet show performed by the excellent cruise director Ray has left us with many fond memories & new found friends.

We took 4 on-shore excusions & felt that they were overpriced. The 2 we took out of Piraeus, Athens we had issues with, (as did the maority of fellow passengers on the Acropolis visit). The initial written response to our written complaint was dealt with promptly, but the final judgement from HQ in Miami (ie. no reduction or compensation) was the only negative aspect on this wonderful vacation.

Would we recommend Nautica?? Not if it meant that it became too popular & lost it's wonderful ambience & high standards.

Will we be setting sail again?? Well let's just say that I've already been on-line less than 24 hours after returning home seeing what Oceania has to offer!!
Quality of Food5
The majority of dinners were taken in the open dining Grand Dining room, which was excellent, but we were fortunate to be able to eat several times in Toscana & Polo Grill. Toscana won out in the overall standard of service.
Entertainment4
The best all round performance was from the Cruise Director Ray, but the comedian/illusionist Crig Diamond put on a very slick show.
Shore Excursions2
Best trip Siena, although it was a 11 hour marathon on penultimate day. Worst trip by far was the visit to the Acropolis due in part to nil organisation at the site.
Staff5
The cruise director seemed to be involved from morning 'til evening & was very professional.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Enough for us
Cabins4
Very comfortable bed, plenty of storage space. Shower cubicle a little cramped. Excellent service from stateroom stewardess.

The 18% service charge made the wine over-priced: we paid $34-$53 for wines which would've cost £8-£18 retail in the UK. The excursions ARE over-priced, but we only took 2 (thankfully not the Acropolis trip and shame on Oceania for not owning up to the dangerous, overcrowded shambles it sounded like). We agree that the Siena trip was very enjoyable, and might have been worth the $318 it cost the two of us had lunch, with wine, been included. The big draw on Oceania's three ships is the passenger space ratio (see the Berlitz rankings), the small(er) ship ambience and the food. All the restaurants are good (the Toscana in our view is usually very good) although we had one unmemorable dinner outside in Tapas on the Terrace. One disappointing aspect was that we could not dock at Delos/Mykonos (and we note that there's another review saying that the next cruise couldn't dock there either, as well as a load of other ports of call).

We were on this cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service and food were excellent and we loved the smaller ship having previously travelled on one much larger. We would also give Oceania five stars and are already considering booking for next year.

For us this was also our first cruise, and both of us enjoyed the experience. But the Acropolis visit was a disaster, not on the part of the excursion staff, but the Greek authorities at the Acropolis. There could have been a major disaster caused by the sheer number of tourists trying to get off the monument.Otherwise, five stars all the way. We however felt that the Bar prices were a bit steep and the wine was overpriced. Dyer, Clows Top
