The only advantage of booking a tour with the ship is that should there be any problems or delays the ship will wait for you - if you do your own thing and miss the ship then all costs to rejoin the cruise are down to you - we love to do our own thing and avoid waiting for people all the time - and we have saved a fortune and eaten in some strange places by doing it ourselves.
