My wife and I like the size of the Seabourn ships and when we discovered that there would be a cruise from Alexandria to Mombassa we quickly signed up. Unfortunately due to a pirate attack the previous year the cruise was changed to Alexandria to Dubai! This was still interesting as it included visits to Oman, a particular interest for us as we had friends who had lived and worked there.
As we had not previously visited Egypt we took the opportunity to take the pre cruise tour staying at the Four Seasons Hotel. The tour was very good and the hotel sumptious, although we were critical of the breakfasts, which were often less than hot.
As part of the pre cruise we were taken direct to the port at Alexandria, which was very helpful.
We had sailed on the Seabourn Spirit before, but are always delighted by the warmth of the welcome on board and the delight of the cabins. On this occasion we were fortunate enough to receive an upgrade to a cabin with opening french windows.
We soon settled into the ships routine although on the first night we caught the edge of a storm! one of the things we like about Seabourn is that you can dine when and with whom you like. Whilst it is nice to meet others, at times after a busy day on shore, it is nice to have a quiet meal with your partner. Also, before a day out, it can be convenient to have breakfast in your cabin.
The food is superb and the wines offered are very satisfactory. We became friendly with the sommelier, who was the most knowledgeable we have ever met. Service is outstanding, although, as they won't let you lift a finger and the food is so good, it is impossible not to put on weight!!
The cruise itinerary was excellent, with days at sea and enough ports to provide variety. The highlight of our trip was the day we spent in Petra, which could be the subject of a book in its own right.
When the ship was at sea we enjoyed dancing at night to the music of a delightful Polish couple. There were a small group of us, A Russian couple from Moscow, a group of travellers from South Korea, two younger couples from Essex,UK and ourselves also fom UK.
There are many other things I could write, but will close by saying that the overall experience was excellent.
