Mixed Reactions on Oriana

Reviewed By: GABB, Highcliffe Christchurch on 3rd Dec 2008
Cruise Line: P&O Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Oriana Sailed: October, 2008
Destination: Mexico Age: 65+
Have just returned from a 30 day visit to America and the Caribbean from/to Southampton of which the highlight was an overnight stay in New Orleans. Having waited so many years to go to New Orleans, the experience was even better than that anticipated. For some reason P & O did not have any evening tours, they said "Health and Safety" the answer to nearly all questions!) so we did our own thing and to tell the truth we felt safer there in the French Quarter at midnight than visiting Bournemouth on a Saturday night. We walk from the ship starting out at 19.00hrs with a couple from the excellent Chris Walker Swingtet along Bourbon Street and Deuchar Street to the Palm Court Restuarant but infortunately if you had not booked there was no table available to eat so we visited another establishment for food before returing along the cacophony of sound that is Bourbon Street at night. Whatever your taste in music is available all blaring out into the warm night air. On returning to the ship we encountered one of those white tunic marching bands complete with Sousaphone - wonderful Trad Jazz. Back on board Captain David Pembridge was a genial host and we were also kept fully informed by the Staff Captain Neil Turnbullof the weather and sea conditions which on occassions had quite a swell. The entertainment from the Headliners Theatre Company were better than any I have seen in 37 years of cruising, particularly the singers Paul Loxon and Mark Pheasant who could easily win shows like "X Factor" they are stars in the making. Of the other band s on board Natural High and Rebound were great as were the individual members of the Matthew Newton Orchestra when given solo spots. When Tom O'Connor did his two nights there was not an empty seat in the theatre and with passengers also standing around the sides he did not disappoint a single person and was given a standing ovation on each occassion. Other performers who were also on the cruise included The Batchelors, Booby Knutt, Elaine Delmar, Richard Beavis, Chris Watkins, Lois Hoover, Opera Stars, a couple of Classical pianists, various speakers and Sir Bernard Ingham with an after dinner speach which was well received. Of the entertainment Officers Andy Kitchin, Pablo Moles, Gavin Reeman, and Jo Benquesus excelled whilst a couple of the others were ineffective. When Lunching in the Peninsular Restuarant invariably the topic raised by a large number of passengers was the quality and presentation of the food which I agreed with was the worst I have experienced on any P & O Ship. It certainly was not like that a couple of years ago. The boiled potatoes often had the eyes left in them and when replaced were no better. Most vegetables were undercooked , i.e. dipped in and out of hot water and still raw/hard not "al dente" also beans and mange tout peas had not been topped and tailed. Once fish and chips were served with the cod still cold inside the batter , surely a "Health & Safety issue" which they are so keen on. Executive Chef Ian Summers you had better get a grip on your department if you wish to retain your cutomers. Highlights from the othe ports were seeing the Veterans Parade in Key West (why dont we honour our veterans in the same way), the Aquarium in Atlantis Nassau, the visit to the Mayan Ruins from Cozomel even though a number of passengers did not make the crossing without being sick, The beautiful swimming in the warm waters of Grand Cayman and Tortola, The drenching in Jamaica but it did wonders for the fall of the Dunne River. Madeira , Vigo and La Corunna were the other ports of call and each have their own charms. To some up it was a very nice lead up to Christmas if only the food had come up to expectations and was that due to the Exec Chef or Carnival cutbacks in staff?
Quality of Food2
Ate most of the time in the Restuarant where the food was below par with veg being most unsatisfactory. The Gary Rhodes menu was very good and we did not feel over full on leaving. The attention to detail and service was excellent.
Entertainment5
Tomm O'Connor, nad Bobby Knutt both were excellent. Why does Bobby Crush have to produce the picture of his first record at each performance and I have can recite his text between the pieces as he has never changed the script in the last 4 occassions that I have ssen him only that the fan comes from a different Town. Chris Walker's presentations on Jazz were terrific Well done the Headliners Theatre Company you are better each time I see you.
Shore Excursions4
Vigo to Baniao was very nice and Tulun
Staff5
Maciello the Wine waiter in Peninsular restuarant as he was always very pleasant and walked around with a nice smile for everyone . The Waiters were again very attentive but hwe had a very poor Section Head named ROBERT
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
Plenty of activities But the timings could be better spread
Cabins3
Have had one in the same position before and was as expected
Overall Rating3

Having just returned from Oriana's Iberian Celebrations cruise on 8th January, I can't help but think I have been on a different ship to that which GABB was on. I found the ship to be excellent, the food excellent, We ate in the Oriental Restaurant for dinner with one night in the Rhodes restaurant. Whilst the entertainment may well be of personal choice, we had the Batchelors as the main act, who were great and really got the audience singing along with them. Whilst I did not see Captain David Pembridge round the ship a great deal, this can always be that we were simply not at the same place at the same time. One only has to remember how many times you see the same passenger more than once. All in all I would have absolutely no question about cruising on Oriana again.

You are obviously having a laugh Was there a captain in board. Saw hiim twice once for 5 mins at party then again once more in Crows Nest entertaining "the luvvies" opera stars etc. Also being kept informed of weather conditions I think we were on a different cruise to you. Everybody was complaining of lack of communication. Headliners shows were, to say the least, screeching banchies, having more fun in the ports of call bars and in the Riveria swimming pool. Agree with comment about waste of space Robert Haed Waiter. Terrace Grill fantastic also Rhodes. Penninsular restaurant food very poor. Waiters fantastic. Ports of call great. Weather insignificant. All in all a god cruise with poor entertainment and poor communication.

I agree with all comments apart from food. We did the world cruise on Oriana this year and the food was terrible, so although it was not brilliant this time, it was better than the last time.I sent steak back on several occasions as it was not edible. We also had Macielle and Robert as our wine/head waiters and I totally agree with your comments re both. I think the food on all P&O ships has deterioated and although we have 3 more cruises booked with them we will be looking at alternatives thereafter.
