My daughter and I went on this cruise for some rest and relaxation before Christmas. The weather across the Bay of Biscay both out and back was appalling and on the way back our last port of call at Cherbourg was cancelled because it had taken so long to travel across the Bay of Biscay from our last stop at Oporto. This weather is not the fault of Fred Olsen cruises of course, but we had done similar trips in larger ships (P and O) with less problems, so consider carefully. Black Watch is a tired old ship but the cabin was Ok with good storage space, a dated shower and furnishings. The staff are excellent, very considerate, helpful and attentive. The food is good, well presented and interesting, but sometimes a little small in portion. There is a good, reasonably priced wine list. The greatest disappointment for us was the "casino" which consisted of one blackjack table and one roulette table with only six places at each. There are no slot machines at all.
We found that the activities were also very limited and repetitive. The "games " room was very badly resourced with three darts that worked. Having said all this the Black Watch was a very friendly ship with a good crew.. so sometimes small is beautiful!
