Chasing the Midnight Sun

Reviewed By: Cope, Llandudno. Conwy on 3rd Dec 2008
Cruise Line: Fred. Olsen Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Boudicca Sailed: July, 2008
Destination: Arctic Age: 65+
This was our first time on Boudicca and our first cruise to the midnight sun, unfortunately on this occasion we did not see it!!!
The weather at Tromso was lovely, sunny and warm and the rest of the way going North was reasonable but rather cloudy, particularly at the North Cape where it was also misty, although as a result of that the captain sailed all round the Cape to give us a better look, before sailing to Spitzbergen. We first docked at Longyearbyen and walked ashore to see the local shops and scenery, before going on to Ny Alesund where we saw the research station and village. Leaving Ny Alesund we then cruised the fiord and sailed past the deserted Russian coal mining village before sailing back down the coast to Bergen. A very interesting and as usual Fred Olsen enjoyable experience. We have now sailed on all their ships except Balmoral, but still prefer Black Watch, and we set off from Southampton to Tahiti in January 2009.

It seems that we have things in common: We did this cruise on the Braemar in 2007 and absolutely loved it - our favourite cruise so far. Have you seen our photos from the Arctic? Also, the Black Watch is our favourite ship and we too are setting off on a great adventure in January. We've already bought our snorkelling gear! Perhaps we'll meet up...

Yes, we're doing the Black Watch world cuise - all the way - and we're counting the days and hours (32 days, 19 hours) until we sail on January 6th! ;-)
