Hawaii Islands Cruise

Reviewed By: Fassam, Canterbury on 3rd Dec 2008
Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Times cruised before: 6-10
Cruise Ship: Golden Princess Sailed: November, 2008
Destination: Hawaii Age: 65+
We have just returned from one of the dozen or so fortnightly cruises that the Golden Princess runs to the Hawaiian
island-cruises-summer-holidays/">Islands. The cruise started off wonderfully well as we were given the choice of a pre cruise overnight stay in Los Angeles
at either the LAX Hilton or for the same price an outside cabin on the Queen Mary at Longbeach doh! We had by co-incidence
cruised on this ship three years ago to the Carribean and were concerned that standards may have dropped but no they had not if any thing the food was better, pot roast Buffalo steaks or a giant plate of King crab legs anyone, even the constant background music! on the lido buffet seemed a bit quieter. We started of with late sitting dining but as this
was a bit late finishing we opted for anytime dining this worked well even though sometimes a personal pager had
to be used we also had the choice of either Donatellos or Berninis Restaurants.
The downside of this cruise was the weather, apart from the first day every sea day, there were eight in total, was
cold and overcast, not ideal for outside activities, an excellent pianist and a string quartet provided some quality
compensation. In fact the sea was so rough with a 35 knot wind that after two attempts at docking at Nawiliwili
Kauai the captain had to abandon the port and opted for a very interesting cruise via the Na Pali coast, an areas
rarely seen by cruise liners, and a circumnavigation of the whole island.
The disembarkation at Los Angeles was very efficient and 20 dollar pre booked transfer tickets to LAX meant that
we went straight onto a waiting bus. Overall apart from the weather an enjoyable cruise with friendly staff very good
food both in the buffet and all dining rooms very clean everywhere, no Norovirus, no complaints apart from expensive
ships shore excursions!

In reply to your comment, we were given the option of pre booking a transfer to LAX on the ship and charged to our on-board account, this will come in the paperwork that you will get from the shore excursions office, as you have a late flight, ours was very early, you should have the option of a guided tour of LA for about 40 dollars these are usually very good, check using your booking number on Princess web site where you can pre book all shore excursions, hope this was helpful.
