Cruise Reviews

A great cruise spoiled

Reviewed By: dickens, Stoke on Trent on 2nd Dec 2008
Cruise Line: Fred. Olsen Cruises Times cruised before: 10+
Cruise Ship: Black Watch Sailed: November, 2008
Destination: Iberia Age: 65+
We have just returned from the Iberian welcome cruise (27/11/08--01/12/08) on board Black Watch. A great ship, marvelous food, reasonable drink prices, excellent staff, and a great captain. The entertainment was only average, but enjoyable. The weather in the bay of Biscay was awful gale 9 gusting to hurricane 12 with seas over 22ft high, this meant that due to the weather holding the ship back we were unable to dock at Cherbourg. The ship does not handle the weather very well with a lot of pitching and rolling, and the creaking and banging in the cabins was awful, the worst part of the cruise was the ridiculous smoking policy where smokers in the lido bar were seated at adjoining tables to the non smoking section, and in many cases the smokers removed the non smoking signs from the bar, and were then issued with an ash tray by the staff!! the entire ship reeked of tobacco smoke and made it very unpleasant, and spoilt the lines image!
Quality of Food4
restaurant, a la carte, the entire menu was excellent every choice was first class
Entertainment5
cherokee duo in the lido bar was vrey good, but the classical collections opera performances were world class!!
Shore Excursionsn/a
did not take any, prefer to go solo
Staff5
Surachai, a young thai waiter in the lido bar, always smiling, always pleasant and very efficient
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
the weather curtailed some activities, but there was always plenty of indoor activity to join in
Cabins5
the cabin was excellent, spacious and perfectly clean.
Overall Rating5

Hello folks its Sonja here. I too was on this cruise. Merry Christmas to you all. I think the staff were absolutely wonderful, the older passengers were bloody awful, coming from the I want something for nothing brigade!!! But yes, we are all entitled to our opinions, its still a free country. Kay and Steven were a wonderful couple and I spent many a happy evening with them playing blackjack, giving fred a bit more money, but it was my choice. I got into a lot of trouble on that cruise with the older passengers but they had nothing better to do than to take a pot shot at me. The captain was a comedian, and the hotel manager was a gentleman in the end. God bless this ship and all who sail in her!! Love to Manuel, the bar manager, Juan he was lovely, and teresa the cabin lady!!! Yes deck 5 was very noisy but my husband Graham slept through the lot. Am not absolutely certain who we will sail with next year but sail we will. Love to Steve and Sheila who shared table 9 with us for dinner. And hope Fred enjoyed his trip round canary islands. Merry Christmas folks, the reunion is taking place at my pub in January when you will all be very welcome, including Olav the captain. Sonja Molden

thought the ship handled the bad weather very well. The smoking was a bit of a nuisance but was easily overcome by avoiding the smoking areas.Whem we sat in the Lido we sat well away from the smoking area

I was also on this cruise and have to disagree, the ship performed very well in the weather and the Captain handled it perfectly. I was on Deck 4 and there was movement overnight but there would be in a storm, wouldn't there?

I was also on this cruise and remember 'Dickens' and his wife very well!!!! As do the fellow smokers I was on the cruise with, as every time any of us dared to light a cigarette in the smokers bar, he was huffing and puffing and complaining to his wife, and waving his arms around like a demented urautang. There is no shortage of non smoking bars on the Black Watch, and indeed, in the Lido bar, no shortage of non smoking tables that were available nowhere near the smoking section. In fact Mr Dickens seemed to take delight in sitting as close to the smoking section as possible purely to give himself something to complain about, and from what I observed, these were the only conversations the two of them ever had in the evenings. I notice that Mr Dickens has stated his age at 65 well I can only assume that he had a very hard paper round as a boy. Also I would put the average age of this cruise between 65 and 95 !!!!! And with that I mean 98% of the passengers. Very strange considering the people (models) in the Fred. Olsen brochure seem to all be between 35 and 55, but the entertainment is solely aimed at pensioners (and octogenarians at that!). I was in the Lido bar every night as it was described in the brochure as the bar for the "younger set" and still we had to listen to music from Cole Porter to the mid seventies, and absolutely nothing later. The Fred Olsen staff told us that as people in our mid forties we should never have gone near ANY Fred Olsen cruise, as they are aimed entirely at pensioners, and should have gone to P&O or Ocean Village. I will write my own review soon... and if you are under 65 I would read it before booking a Fred Olsen cruise.....

"...the average age... between 65 and 95!!!!!" Five exclamation marks! My partner and I are both in your age range and have no problem at all with Fred Olsen's ships appealing to older people. Apart from making us feel young, we like the fact that older people are much less likely to bring children on board. Older people are just like younger people - except that they've lived longer and tend to have a greater respect for tradition and formality. As a smoker, I sympathised with the first part of your comment; it's a pity that you went on to demonstrate that you are just as intolerant as Dickens.

Anderson, it is obvious that your brain is as fogged as your lungs probably are , firstly neither my wife or me did not make any comments in public about smokers, we saved them for the internet to warn others about selfish ignorant people like you who who think it is normal to ignore no smoking signs and stand showing others what a big man you are, if I remember right you were the scruff who wore the same jeans and shirt throughout the voyage in an effort to look young and trendy, when in fact you just looked pathetic, my comments were aimed at people like you smoking in the nonsmoking areas

Good god dickens, don't use double negatives. Did you not study very well in your school days. Mind you its never too late to learn you know. Suggest you take yourself off to your local library and enrol there. But please don't spend the rest of your life moaning, its far too short for that. Sonja

When you write, "...neither my wife or me did not make any comments..." you imply that you both did make comments. Did you mean to write, "...neither my wife nor I made any comments..."?

thank you anderson for your coments about dickens smoking complaints ,i dont smoke but my wife does we sat near him one evening and heard his mutterings about the disgusting habit . his comment not mine. to say all the ship reeked of tobacco smoke is quite untrue .what i cant understand is why sit in a room where smoking is allowed in the first place .the best peaple i met were the smokers in the bars they were funny, very friendly and relaxed ,he should have sat with the miseries in the large non smoking lounge they were either asleep or moaning about something .i am 69 but young at heart and live and let live ,lets face it the cruise was as cheap as chips why most of us were on it, if you are honest and admit it . i wont be going on another freds cruise i like a bit of life .non smokers dont please start any debate i am sick to death of hearing about it just get a life and enjoy it ,our age group havent got much time left . look foreward to your review anderson i cant be bothered to write one.
